  • Your media source for BYU news?

Tom Holmoe sent me (and a few thousand others) a questionnaire begins by asking me to rank the top four media sources I most frequently visit for BYU news, among other questions. If one selects "Other", one is asked what the other source is. I suppose I should be embarrassed, but my top two sources are CUF, and then CB. Obviously, posts of breaking news usually include links to one of the other sites, but for me, I start here. I'm reluctant to call attention to ourselves, but I am an honest man, and cannot dissemble, certainly not to Tom Holmoe.

    These are the choices, btw:

    KSL.COM
    ESPN.COM
    BYUCOUGARS.COM
    DESERETNEWS.COM
    SLTRIB.COM
    COUGARFAN.COM
    COUGARBLUE.COM
    FACEBOOK.COM
    TWITTER.COM
    OTHER

Where do you folks start in your search for BYU news?

  • #2
#1 CougarFan.com - It's a pretty good aggregator, more selective than the CUF newsbot which makes me think that someone is manually doing the aggregation.

#2 - CUF - for all the various tidbits that CougarFan.com doesn't pick up.

    I never visit CB.

Which one of those is HB Arnett's site? I rarely go to his site, but I still like that newsletter. I remember seeing the newsletter for the first time, it was in the Primary room of the Frederick, Maryland LDS church while watching BYU football on Satruday afternoons over the satellite network. One of the other guys was a subscriber and I literally remember thinking, "How cool! I've got to get this!"
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I started using Twitter a few months ago, and while it can be difficult to get a good set of sources without letting inane commentary take over, I've got a pretty good balance at the moment. I follow Drew and Wrubell, TaloTBS, Gman, and a few other guys. Jay Bilas and Dicky V and the gang can be fun, but they just post way too much stuff. Twitter can start feeling like a job to keep up with when you follow too many people like that. I'll pare things down further once bball season is over too.

I listed CUF as my #1 under "other". I'm sure that will put us on the map.

As did I. Tom, please introduce yourself in the Ellis Island forum. You're doing a great job (assuming we learn of a Rose extension soon, which you should feel free to announce here on CUF).

That's a flash from the past. I used to work for the guy that started CougarFan.com. John Ahlander was his name (at least I think I got it right). Very good guy. It was a long time ago but I think he would use a webcrawler to find articles and then would update the articles manually. I'm not sure if that is still the process used but it wouldn't surprise me. It also helped back in the day that he worked for a company that created webcrawlers. That company is now defunct.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Yeah, I'm old school. I don't use twitter and that kind of stuff. I like it mainly because I don't have to go to the Trib and DNews and DailyHerald sites all separately but it's not really a "breaking news" type of thing - more for reading all the writeups the morning after.

Seriously guys. CUFNewsBot can read what you're saying.

Let's take this conversation into one of the transporter pods. CUFNewsBot can't read our lips, can it?

                        Isn't TaloTBS a fake account?

Pretty much Twitter and CUF. I will click on links from either if the article loooks interesting. Twitter is conventient for me because I use it extensively for work so following a few of the sports guys works great.

I'm not really sure what that means, since I don't know who the real "TaloTBS" is, but yeah I've heard something about that account being somehow not entirely above board. All I know is that when news breaks, it tends to come from him before it comes from anybody else.

I feel left out. I never got an email from Tom.
