Incorporate byes, home-field and re-seed teams as to preserve the significance of the regular season.

Also, there's no way the university presidents would sign off on a plan that begins in Thanksgiving. The 12-game regular season has to be protected, because cutting it would take away home games -- the gate being the bread-and-butter of smaller schools and the communities that they play in, and money that would likely not be recouped through huge TV money for a playoff. That 12th game is the Holy of Holies for ADs.
start the week before labor day and there is 13 weeks till thanksgiving. I respectfullly disagree about the ratings. Boise st brought in ratings, Utah brought in ratings. Again you would only have 2 or 3 Non-aq teams in the tourny. I agree play the games at the highest seed home field until the champ game and have it where it goes now. The teams that lost can also play in bowl games.

You would only have 2 days of 4 games. My point was that what makes March Madness so awesome is 16 games today and tomorrow, then 8 on Sat and Sun.

What makes March Madness great is not the amount of the games. Its the fact that the championship is played out on court.

I'll speak for the professors and say that having students play in championships during final exams is not good, and I would oppose it in faculty senate.

It wouldn't be worth billions to CBS/TNT/TBS/Tru if there were 16 games.

I don't have a problem with it (but maybe I'm not in the set of professors for whom you speak). Of course, in the years I taught undergrads at a "troubled football school in the midwest", I think I only had 1 football player take one of my classes (plenty of volleyball, hockey, track, tennis, etc but not football).

Remember that I'm all in favor of paying them. But, if we're going to keep up the "Student athlete" charade at certain schools, then how could I vote in favor of a playoff?

                    From Sports Illustrated:

If the sport's leaders decided to stage a playoff, there would be no shortage of suitors (most notably TV networks)—and they know that. In 1999 a Swiss marketing firm offered $2.4 billion over eight years to stage a 16-team event.
Add Inflation what could they get now? In total it would still be less than the bball tournament but it would only be split between 116 schools where as BBAll is split between 400 schools.

I had lots of classes with football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball players at BYU and Tulane. Some football players, like Jimmy Richards, were very solid students. Fernando Pessoa, the volleyball player, was a good student too. But, even the good student athletes get tired from travel, from injury, and from training. When you look at what they have to do, it's like two full-time jobs. Now, factor in bad student athletes, like the football players in my classes at Georgia Tech, and I couldn't really vote for a playoff during final exams, in good conscience.

Both reasons are what makes March Madness great.

Which weekend do you look forward to more, opening weekend (16 games Friday, 16 games Saturday, 8 games Friday and 8 games Saturday) or Championship weekend (2 games Saturday, 1 game Monday)? I would wager that while the Championship weekend is awesome, the majority of Americans enjoy the first weekend more with its plethora of upsets, perfect brackets and buzzer beater after buzzer beater.

Which is why it should be a 16 team playoff - 11 conference champions and 5 at large. Every team has a chance to win it all.

and then the president would override everyone with his vote. If your faculty senate is anything like our's, it's got as many teeth as a newborn babe.

We have professors on the board of trustees and seats on the budget committee.

yeah, we don't. Our board is basically a bunch of rich donors who tell the president what to do sometimes and that always rolls downhill.
