Anyway, I think you and one or two othes in this thread, with your small minded, parochial, classic BYU Rodin hating ignorance have shown that Young is probably better off at UW; it would also be a step up in his career up by any measure. Those of us who care about him, and there are many, probably realize this would be a great move for him personally and professionally. Professionally, he never has had much connection with the state anyway, until he came to Utah. Why should he remain in a place populated by stupidity such as you spew in this thread when he can be in a place where peoople couldn't care less, are 100% indifferent about his religion or status vis-a-vis his religion?

Utah has also never had a problem hiring fabulous presidents. It's never had anything but great ones clear back to James Fletcher. They all tend eventually to gain national prominence. Utah always hires genuine academic titans without regard to their relgion or taste for wine.
Why are you calling me small minded? I put the word "caught" in quotations. I thought the whole thing was a joke. If I were a Utah alum (wait, I am) I would be bummed that Young is being pursued by other schools. Good for him, bad for Utah. Since I don't know him personally, I tend to think more in terms of what's best for the school.

I will agree that Utah has had great past presidents, but wouldn't you rather that these great presidents stick around a little longer? Young has only been at the U for 5 years or so. Regardless of Utah's track record of attracting quality candidates, I would think it would be preferable to not always be in the market for a new leader. I would also hope that Utah would be trending towards more of a destination than a stepping stone.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

What are you talking about? I asked if his religion would be a roadblock...you said "no." I think that's great.

Having been a missionary in the Northwest, I can say that IF there's a place where people are 100% indifferent about religion, Seattle probably isn't that place. If UW is that way, then UW is awesome. He's definitely qualified.

Meh. He's been terrific and will leave a great legacy. But university presidents don't stay forever.

It just clears the way for Gordon Gee to "bring his talents to" Utah. :rockon1:

live in Vegas, but that doesn't matter. Mormon small-mindedness knows no boundaries.

I have heard out of state Mormons, particularly Mormons on either coast, say that Utah mormons are different (in a bad way).

Interestingly, some of the most small minded Mormons I've encountered are from the East Side of the Metro Phoenix area and Southeastern ID. I think Falafel's right.

There are rumors that Huntsman and Young have had a falling out and that Huntsman has basically said he refuses to donate any more money to the school unless Young resigns.

Apparently, Young and Huntsman are at odds because of Young's lifestyle choices.

If true, it's disturbing. Young has been a great president for the U. It seems that as long as he is obeying the law and is excelling at his job, then his position should't be at risk because he has divorced and may not be living a lily-white LDS lifestyle.

It's sickening to think he'd get pushed out because he no longer believes and/or lives all the LDS teachings.

Meh. I'll be sad to see him go.

Maybe they can hire an area authority to take his place. Someone that is squeeky clean and totally LDS and, yet, less effective. That would be super.
Young can do whatever he wants. But he has to realize the effects that his choices might have on the donors he solicits. It's just part of the job anywhere, not just at Utah, though the things that piss off donors in Utah might obviously be different.

This right here is what produces so much angst in some Ute fans (though not necessarily you, PU), and understandably so. It's got to be maddening to hate the church while remaining so beholden to it.

How long do university presidents usually stay? How long was the tenure of the previous president (wasn't his name Menchin or something like that?)?

Perhaps you might consider Dave Rice to replace Young. Just a thought.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Was this the guy whose troubles LA Ute labeled a "tragedy" or some similar melodramatic term? Is that what falafel is referencing? I'm having a hard time believing that the President of the U is in trouble because he drinks wine.

I've heard people insinuate that he cheated on his wife, which may cause Huntsman to think twice about forking over millions. It's sort of a dick move, but it's gotta be tricky to balance roles as businessman, GA and philanthropist, if indeed the Huntsman fallout is real.

As RedSox suggests, this had nothing to do with the WoW, but I'm unable to provide more details. It's very sad, though.

I don't know if this rumor is true. But it should only cause Huntsman to think twice about making a donation to the university if he's become addled. You act like it's a rational response.
