Ok, it hurts a bit to have a two-part special in the Church-owned paper about the coach of the Church-school's rival, but this is more about Fred anyway. A great read.

Why in all the great rivalries between Utah and BYU coaches over the years have the Ute coaches been so much more likeable, full blooded, intrigueing people?
I love Kyle Whittingham! I can't think of a guy I'd rather have in my corner. A guy who excels when the chips are down, or when all is on the line. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

No. You're overly complicated it. I just don't like BYU. I don't like it. It's that simple.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostOnce again you have to bring BYU in to it. I thought about that. To tell you the truth I think I would rather hang with Ron McBride or even Wayne Howard than Lavelle. Lavell is kind of a stuffed shirt. Though I agree, he's the most likeable BYU coach ever. A couple of them like Roger Reid and Frank Arnold were were affirmatively dislikeable which, in the end, was why they were fired, not because of W-L.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI noticed that there was no rival for LEdwards. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Lavell Edwards isn't a stuffed shirt - not at all. He's one of the most genuine persons would could ever meet and I'm guessing that if you ever had a chance to sit down for 10 minutes with him to talk, you'd agree.
Roger Reid away from the basketball floor is a nice guy too, but I agree with your assessment that he wasn't fired because of W-L - he just said dumb things at the most inopportune times.
I met Wayne Howard as a kid and thought he was a jackass. And I also think the same of Frank Arnold."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

Rick Majerus is a lot of things, including a great coach. I'm not sure that "likeable" is one of the terms that comes to mind, though, when I think of him.

I think the term "likable" is about PR. When in front of the media or with Utah boosters, Majerus was terrific and very likable. Of course, he was a complete cretin when it came to treating players.Originally posted by Clark Addison View PostRick Majerus is a lot of things, including a great coach. Arnold, however, was not likable in his relation to the public. At least that's the perception I have of him from personal experience."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

Wayne Howard was the ultimate Ute stereotype. Seek to incite the religious right at every opportunity then when one's nose is unmercifully rubbed in the piddle pile, make up lies and turn it into an issue of religious abuse. I will be an asshole all I like but when you return favor to me I will whine because by golly you claim to be the only true Churc..."HOW COULD YOU BE A MEMBER OF THAT CHURCH?" Wayne was the perfect twit at the perfect time as BYU began to trully flex its muscles.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostSpeaks volumes. You deserve each other.
Which nobody ever points out even if Scovil said what our half crazed pussy claims, I don't believe Scovil was a member of the House.
Also while Reid had his issues, I can't imagine anyone really believing Majerus was a better human. Methinks Utenation's willingness to tolerate Majerus indicates that such appeals to principle, with respect to coaching character, from the Hill should be squelched.
For the record I loved Majerus but I never claim to really give much about a coach's demeanor or when he double pinkie shakes with high school coaches in the Cache Valley. I tend to start and finish with wins and losses. I believe Majerus was a better human. I bet you'd never see Reid choked up talking about Texas Western beating Kentucky for the national title in 1966 like Majerus used to get. Maybe Reid was a better human in a goody two-shoes kind of way. What are your thoughts about how Majerus treated his players? Van Horn, Andre Miller and Alex Jensen are the exceptions, so they can't be mentioned.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI believe Majerus was a better human. Majerus had great values like most humans, but his shortcoming is that he had limited ability to live those values. Nobody you mentioned comes close to frequently treating human beings as poorly as Rick Majerus. It might give you hard on to have him get choked up in a public place, but privately the man was just not a very good human being. Roger Reid treats human beings better than Majerus and I don't think Reid treats people very well.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI believe Majerus was a better human. Sounds like you are easilly manipulated by public demonstrations of piety. You would really like Bronco Mendenhall and the Mormon Church, methinks.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!
