I'll bow out of this since it's none of my business. The only time I even looked up Chow's stats was when we were looking for a new OC, and there was a little talk of Chow on CB. I was just curious what the general feeling was. Sounds like it's optimistic.

Chow as Utah OC?!?!

I agree. I'm a NoCho fan. I think this is a really nice hire for Utah. Frankly, it is a no brainer, at least in my opinion.Originally posted by BoylenOver View PostWhat's "risky" about it? That we're seriously upgrading at the OC position? That UCLA is paying part of his salary?
I can understand the argument that Chow isn't the same OC that helped usher in a decade of dominance for USC, or developed NFL QB after NFL QB at BYU in the '80's. But we don't lose a thing bringing him in.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

And what an opportunity for BJ. Say whatever you will about Chow (and I agree it's a great hire) there's so much knowledge in his head from so many years and so many great college QBs that BJ can't help but benefit.Originally posted by BoylenOver View PostNobody has to leave, since Pease retired. You let Whittingham coach the defensive line (which he has experience; he was the d-line coach in 1994), and you have Chow take over the OC position with heavy influence on the QB's while BJ continues to grow and mature as a coach.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

So, You leave yourself short 1 defensive coach going into your first season in the PAC12, stretching your head coach even thinner, while having 2 Quarterback coaches? I know BJ is a popular guy, but is it really worth the risk?Originally posted by BoylenOver View PostNobody has to leave, since Pease retired. Schramm: Nice guy but Utah can stand to lose him.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostThis week, Radio in San Diego was reporting that Rocky Long is pursuing Schramm to be OC at SDSU
I'm a Chow naysayer. I don't think he will help out Utah very much. Known quantity, tired schemes, marginally better than what they were running with the second half of this past season, but Kyle could have gotten much better talent at this coaching position.
We'll see if Chow proves me wrong.

He developed the talent. He's had an absurd number of quarterbacks win Heismans and succeed in the pros. It's less about the schemes. Sorry, I think Whit knows best. (Whit of course was a player when Chow was coach; it's a natural combination.)Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostSchramm: Nice guy but Utah can stand to lose him.

I'm with SU. Every scheme is foolproof; it's getting the players and coaching them up that matters.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostHe developed the talent. What does Chow have to do to get some love? He'll bring some stability to the offense. Great hire."More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

Not fail miserably in this job like he has in his previous two.Originally posted by Solon View Post

Is two an "absurd number" over 30 years of coaching QBs?
That nitpicking aside - it's a good, solid hire by Utah. It's not going to change the field that much. But I think he'll do a solid job and give them some identity and organization that their program needs on the offensive side of the ball.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī

(a) there were a lot of people at BYU involved in developing Steve Young and Chow was just one of them - in fact, wasn't he officially the WR coach when Young was there?
(b) Of the three QBs he coached that were most successful he was with two of them for one year each (Rivers and Palmer) and never played the third (Cassell).
But anyway... that's all just for the fun of annoying SU. Chow is a good hire for Utah.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī
