I agree. I think he will get better as he matures. At least I plan to expect that until all available evidence indicates I should stop expecting it.

I also think both he and Heaps lost their virtue a bit with some big hits early. I am the eternal optimist and expect both to bounce back next year.

I view him more as fragile than disinterested at this point. He took a decent pop in the first game and has flinched ever since. He was definitely not running great routes during a stretch...*cough* Riley's time *cough...but even with Jake on Saturday night he was running not to get killed instead of to dominate his inferior opponent.

I fear that Betsy and Ross were cut from the same cloth.

Indy put out stats this morning that showed Apo's production this year as a freshman are right on par with Hoffman's production. Hopefully Apo can pick things up next year and develop the same way Hoffman has.

Coats got over it as a senior and made a living as a fullback in the NFL for a few years.

You take that back! Despite his mogul skiing celebration upon entering the Holyzone for the first time he remained steadfast in his Cougar faith and became a great team player.

A few other tidbits on Hoff.

During his redshirt year he hated Provo and was ready to pack his bags. He had his high school coach and parents shop him around thinking that now that he was good enough for BYU he would have more interest. He felt like he didn't fit in and wanted to leave. They actually called Sac. State who was his only previous offer and were told the timing was bad and Sac St did not even have an opening for him. He was getting ready to go home and maybe got he JC route when he met a BYU cheerleader. He stuck it out and even though he is no longer with the cheerleader it has obviously paid dividends. I wonder how many offers he would have now if he decided to leave.

I was also told the only contention between Hoff and HEaps is the same all receivers and QBs have. Hoff thinks he is always open and when he is not he has told Jake to "just throw it up". Riley takes that literally and it has worked, I think we will see Jake do the same. Receivers need to earn a QBs trust and the best way to do that is by making plays.

Apo is still a piss poor route runner but sadly he has improved. Like Doman said we may be expecting to much out of him he is only a freshman. Because he is so physically gifted you expect him to dominate from day 1 but there is a lot to learn as a wide receiver. I just don't think he quite gets it and hopefully someday he does. If and when it finally clicks he will be unstoppable.

So he improved from something less than piss poor to now reaching the piss poor standard? Hopefully he can continue to improve and come back next season prepared to make the leap that Hoff has made between freshman and sophomore.

I'd like Apo to take a lesson from Hoff and start catching the ball with his hands now and then. I think it would make a big difference.

I thought Hoffman had a shot at sticking in the NFL. As good of a shot as any receiver post-Austin Collie.

According to the article, he just joined the team three weeks ago. Hopefully he can make some progress and get a foothold in the pros.
