Dan Hawkins to be fired on Tuesday

Maybe this has already been discussed, but on Saturday the Buffs blew a 28-point lead at Kansas with less than 12 minutes left and lost 52-45. From the story:

Hawkins continued to take heat, however, for having his quarterback son, Cody, throwing the ball in the fourth quarter when running out the clock with a big lead was in order. Some critics suggested he was more concerned about getting his son the school's all-time passing record than he was about winning games.

I'm not suggesting he shouldn't be fired, but he shouldn't be taking heat for that, IMO. From the 4th qtr play-by-play you can see that they didn't throw the ball until a 2nd-and-12 play with about 9 minutes left, up by two touchdowns. That was incomplete so they passed again on 3rd-and-12 and got the first down. They then ran two run plays, the second one resulted in a fumble which Kansas returned for a TD pulling within seven points with 7:12 still left in the game.

Anyway, I think Hawkins and Dirk Koetter's experiences post-Boise St. have helped guys like Chris Petersen, Gary Patterson, and KW decide to stay put.

I think what I've learned from Koetter and Hawkins' experiences is that Peterson has always been the brains behind that operation.

I think they would be dumb to not throw out a line. I think now would be as good as any for someone to lure Bronco away. But just reading between the lines I think Bronco senses some potential in what he has now to make some noise shortly.

Going independent is a fairly seismic event for a football program. I'd say it ranks below probation, but above losing your athletic director. I think Bronco will give this independence thing a go, but I'd imagine he's reserving a small space in his mind for a fallback option in case it doesn't work like he imagined.

I agree, which is why I said this is as good a time as any for someone to make a run at him. There is quite a bit of uncertainty heading down the path of independence.

Petersen wasn't on Koetter's staff, and to Hawkins' credit he hired Petersen giving him his first OC job.

I wonder if/when Crowton will get another shot. It seems the consensus here is he's a good OC, not a good HC; maybe it's not a good HC when under the Honor Code.

The Colorado athletic budget is not in the best financial shape.

They've wanted to fire Hawk for awhile now... it is overdue.

They still have to buyout almost 2 million to get rid of him.

He was the second lowest paid coach in the Big12.

Good riddance.... CU couldn't win squat with that guy.
