That he didn't play anything but special teams last year does make you wonder.
I get it about his true freshman year, SC had in credible talent starting for him that year. I also don't expect much out of true freshman anywhere.

His sophomore year he was less productive and only appeared in 7 or 8 games that year. I am not aware of any injuries (correct me if I am wrong DDD). So he didn't even start on special teams where a lot of teams top reserve linebackers do.

Kav played around 15 games for SC. He had 5 tackles. See ya, Kav.

Of course, playing behind Chris galippo wasn't going to help his pt, either.
If he was good enough to make and impact though they would have put him at another one of the LB positions. Captain Pete was great about getting the best players on the field. It didn't matter to him the age or if he had to make an adjustment to the position they played. The 3 lb positions are easy to cross train. If Kav was good, he would have been moved to play along with Galippo and not just be his back up for 3 years.

I hold J.C. transfers in higher regards than I do transfers from 4 year schools. They rarely make an impact when they leave. Paris Warren and Max Hall are the only ones I can think of that have made an impact at BYU or Utah in the past 10 years. Max was a little different. He transferred after his mission and at the time, it had nothing to do with playing time.

I agree. He just wasn't as good as advertised. He sophomore year, he came out of spring ball and the rumor was that norton thought him to be slow. Plus, he was playing behind or around galippo, simmons, kennard, etc. It just want going to work. All of a sudden, he wanted to be in an LDS environment so he puts in for his transfer. Pete granted it almost immediately.

I think kav will be an upgrade for byu but let's not fool ourselves...byu was not where this kid wanted to play ball.

Ps no injuries for him. Maybe you were thinking of hebron fangupo?

We're getting just a tad ahead of ourselves aren't we?

The title of this thread should be re-named "BYU's prospects of becoming bowl eligible in 2010".

Let's also be honest here, Kav didn't really choose BYU over USC.
I only claim to be sure of one thing - that he'll be a significant upgrade on Shane Hunter.

That said - I got consistent reports from people who were there that Kav was consistently the best LB on the field in fall camp. those reports combined w the fact that BYU's coaches made a strong push for him to get the USC transfer exemption to be able to play this year tell me that he was both more talented and more ready to play than other Y LBs. That strongly suggests to me that we'll see a measurable impact, in relation to Hunter, when he joins the lineup nxt year.

I just didn't think that an injury kept him from seeing action in all of SC's games. I was asking if you knew of one that I didn't know of.

BYU was not the place he wanted to be playing. I really hope there isn't fans out there that really think that he wanted to be in an LDS environment and not SC.

Is Fangupo doing much this year?

Like I said, I saw him 3 or 4 times in spring ball. He looked too big for his height and slow. I am not surprised the coaches made a push for him to be eligible to play. Shane Hunter is their starting backer. There is no doubt he will be an upgrade to Shane. I chuckle though at a lot of BYU fans that think this dude is going to save the world and be a LB in the NFL after his two years at BYU.

EDIT: One other point about your first post in this thread, the only reason Buckner was ahead of Logan was because Buckner was around during spring ball. I understand the hamstring injury he had during fall. I think he will be a significant downgrade from Logan. Logan is really good. Hell, isn't Eason the first corner off the bench and in the game? There isn't a player on the team that can replace what Rich does. This dude I know speaks very highly of the late J.C. signee (his name isn't coming to me right now). He says the kid is the real deal though. We will see if he can do what Rich does for the team.

Schedule smack is lame. Especially when said schedule is a whole year out. Hell, even Utah's schedule looked modest heading into this year.

For all we know Texas could be back to their normal self, Oregon State could be one of the better teams in the PAC, and Utah could be on their way to another good season. There's no way to know...

I admire the optimism. I think our range is about #25 to #50. I see improvement but don't agree on the talent level or team readiness to take that kind of a stride.

Does anyone know what kind of ranking the independent byu would have to post to guarantee a BCS invite? Obviously, 1 or 2, but is there anything more concrete (à la ND)?

I would add Jan Jorgensen as well. He signed with Kentucky out of High School and transferred to the Y, if my memory is serving me correctly.

I know Jan didn't play at kentu, but did he red shirt? Grey shirt? Or go straight on his mission?

Do we even know the benchmark BYU must reach to receive consideration for a BCS game?

Jan didn't ever make it to Kentucky. He went straight on his mission after high school and while on his mission decided he wanted to play closer to his parents. So I am not sure how you would look at that one. I didn't consider it a transfer though.
