Luke Ashworth said that BYU has running a ton of 2 minute offense and they have been very uptempo "slinging the ball around". He said he thinks they will be a lot more balanced on offense this week.

It depends. A lot of times they'll still dress even though they aren't playing because they are a redshirt. Serves as a reward of sorts for their work in practice during the week on the scout team. Especially for conference home games where you don't have to worry about the size of the traveling roster (48 is the number stuck in my head for traveling teams, I want to say 80 is the number for home teams, but I could be wrong).

UNLV is currently the 54th ranked defense giving up 206 yards per game. This is particularly worsened when you consider that they are the 118th ranked rush defense in the country giving up 221 yards per game. They are the 99th ranked team in total defense. Sadly, Utah State is worse at 108th. Even more sad, neither of those teams will be the worst defensive team we will face all year. That distinction will likely fall to New Mexico who is currently 118th. Good news for BYU is Colorado State is also absolutely awful and is ranked 93rd in total defense.

As far as scoring defense, here are the ranks of the teams we are yet to play:

UNLV: 113
Colorado State: 101
New Mexico: 119
Utah: 6
(Utah State, for reference, is 103)

Maybe I'm off, but I don't know that airing it out, unless we're doing so off of play action when the run game is established, is really the right way to go the rest of the year. Although I will say I felt like the Utah State game the offense had decent opportunities, they just did not make plays. So maybe there is hope.

53 is the size of the NFL's active roster. I don't think they are the same. But it is somewhere in that vicinity.

Also, in terms of scoring offense, BYU is ranked 113th in the country right now. And is not in the bottom two in terms of scoring offense in the conference. They're 1 point per game away from not being in the bottom 3 in the conference.

UNLV: 111 at 16.88 points per game
BYU: 113 at 16 points per game
Wyoming: 114 at 15.44 points per game
New Mexico: 113 at 13.63 points per game

Ouch. No wonder TCU and Utah's scoring defenses are so good.

It appears it is a conference rule and not a NCAA rule. For instance the ACC has a travel squad limit of 72. Can't find MWC yet.

I thought there was not a limit to the number of players you could dress at home.

I know there used to not be, but I'm not sure what the final ruling is now. Like Coach said, I think it varies from conference to conference.

I know this is backwards from traditional football logic, but I would like to see BYU pass the ball when they are ahead. To be more specific, there is no good reason why BYU shouldn't be able to run the ball all day on UNLV, CSU, and UNM. I would love to see them get a comfortable (larger than 1 TD) lead by running the ball and getting a couple stops, then open up the passing game a little either through play action or spreading it out a bit.

I'm not convinced yet that they can win a game with a pass-heavy offense out of the gates, but they need to develop the passing game at some point and they should be able to do that by establishing the run first and gaining a lead via the run game. They're not going to be running the ball 70% of the time in the long term.

I get what you are saying, but I think a game where they absolutely dominate from start to finish (like the Wyoming game was looking to be until the pick-6) would do wonders for the teams confidence, especially heading into the Colorado State game on the road. That game is huge, given its implications on getting to a bowl game and getting an extra month of practice.

I'm pretending this last 2 weeks was the real fall camp. That the season is just starting. I expect to see a pretty good freshman QB starting in his first game against a bad team. I expect the Cougars to win 75% of their games and go to a bowl. Good times!
