A few things about the Ute game.

Blechen and the Ute LBs were exposed in a big way tonight. Obviously like BO said they will not see the triple option again this season but when relied upon to make plays they were not able to do it. The Ute D-line as usual played well and did exactly what they were supposed to. Kyle plays the Triple option a lot like Bronco and relies on the safeties to make tackles. Blechen was really bad tonight.

To be honest though who cares? The good thing is non of the polllsters were watching and every team has a game like this throughout the season. In fact it may make them work a bit harder. They could have also been looking forward to TCU.

I am interesting to watch that game next week if TCU can run the ball effectively I think they win. I am not sure Utahs offense will be able to put up the points against TCU that they have on everyone else. In fact it looked like late in that game Utah was scared to throw the ball almost like they have lost a bit of confidence in Wynn.

Also its very clear that the injuries have taken their toll on Asiata he is a lot slower this year.

Great post junkie. I thought Wide was much more effective tonight. Asiata still has nimble feet, and can pick up the tough yardage, but forget a 4th or 5th gear, I don't think he has a 3rd.

Blechen seemed to make a handful of plays in coverage, but yeah, he looked every bit like a true freshman. It also appeared that Manis was on crutches after the game. Perhaps the lack of depth there proved to expose the position even more. Hopefully Fehoko and JJ can be healthy and prepared next year to improve that unit.

yep, he is still powerful, but he is not a threat to go 30 let alone 50.

I have concern about Kerley or any of the other speedsters on a fly sweep. Our LB's don't have a ton of lateral speed and the quick hit to the outside negates the impact of the push that our D-Line gets to disrupt the run. I think we can neutralize Turner as he is more tackle to tackle, but the outside runs gives me heartburn.

My exact text to HL about Blechen was "He looks like a true freshman seeing the triple option for the first time".

Obviously that is to be expected. Biggest play of the night was Siliga absolutely bullying the AF center on that 4th down play, that was impressive.

JIC I agree that without a ton of lateral quickness from the LBs TCU may get the edge but lets be honest what team has the lateral quickness to run with any of those guys? I actually think Asiata will be a factor next week because he may have lost a gear or two but he is still hard to bring down as is Wide. BYU was most effective running it up the gut with Kariya I think the Utes will find similar success.

Did Cullen go back in the game I was not paying ot much attention?

Yes, Cullen did get back into the game. The Utes will need him next week and seeing him finishing the game tonight was good news.

Cullen was in on our last TD. I don't know when he got back in or if he finished. I was watching on a 2x3" screen .

We missed Asiata last year against the Falcons and it showed. He was able to get yards inside that we didn't get last year.

This game was almost the reverse of last year(except the outcome). We held the ball for 12 more minutes, owned the TO margin, and they stayed in the game with quick strike plays.

Kyle Gunther was talking about playing Air Force and he said that the hard part about playing them is that you can make the right play 25 straight times say your responsibility is to tackle the fullback. You can hit him 25 straight times and do your job but most guys eventually get almost bored and decide this time they will read the QB and get him instead of the fullback. That one time they give it to the FB and he takes it up the gut 80 yards. He said if you had 11 5th year seniors you would blow AF out everytime. I 100% agree with him.

I haven't agreed with you on anything Utah in a long time, but this post was spot on. Blechen has a bright future at Utah, but he was terrible tonight. He has a long way to go. People want to compare him to Weddle as a freshman, but there is no comparison.

I have no confidence in Wynn right now, none. He isn't a bad QB by any means, but I don't want to rely on him to win a game. I guess this is why he isn't where BJ was in 2008. In 2008, I felt completely confident in BJ when the game was on the line.

Also, Siliga is just flat out impressive. Without him, I'm not entirely sure that we win that game. He is one of the more impressive young DTs that we have had at Utah.

I agree, but I do think Wynn is about where BJ was as a sophomore: just a little scary because of his decision-making.

I think the coaches will make sure he doesn't take chances against TCU. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Utes not throw down the field but one to four times the whole game just to avoid him having to make those kind of decisions. Dink and dunk. There are enough weapons to get it done if Wynn doesn't take too many bad chances.

Blechen made some mistakes, but he also made huge plays down the stretch when we really needed them.

This guy is going to be fun to watch for the next few years.
