The PAC-10 didn't initially go back to the "package" deal of Colorado and Utah, though, right? They added Colorado thinking they would then get Texas and other Big 12 schools. Then when that fell through, they settled for Utah instead.

Otherwise, why wouldn't they just have announced the addition of Colorado and Utah on the same day?

It doesn't make me feel better or worse one way or the other. But there is no denying that Utah was incredibly lucky to get invited to the PAC-10 the way it did. If you want to say it all started with Jim Delaney and Big 10 expansion instead of Larry Scott trying to poach Texas and friends then that just makes the unlikely string of events ending in Utah to PAC-10 even luckier.

Hey, just go with it -- you got lucky -- mad props to you and especially to Portland Ute for your school getting into an awesome conference.

They announced Colorado because that was the Pac-10's shot over the bow that Baylor was DOA, (and to a lesser degree, that Tech was a longshot and Oklahoma State was being tolerated only because of its ties to Oklahoma). The Pac-10, not for one instant, would've taken Baylor as a compromise to getting Texas and Texas A&M. Hence, the Colorado invite.

PAC invites Colorado. Colorado accepts.
PAC invites Texas, Oklahoma, A&M, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech, rounding out the 16-team conference. Those schools decline.
PAC invites Utah. Utah accepts.
