No joke. Who is there to step up?Originally posted by Flystripper View PostShow me where the play makers are and then I might start feeling better about Jake and BYU.
Sitting there watching BYU flounder against USU, I remembered a year earlier being in Columbus. SC/tOSU game: 4th quarter, SC down and needing a score, only a few minutes on the clock left, deep in their own territory, 4th down.
True freshman Matt Barkley connects....to Joe McKnight. Joe carries the ball a few more times on that drive.
Later in the drive, true freshman Matt Barkley hands it off.....to Stafon Johnson. Touchdown.
Result: epic W.
BYU doesn't have a Joe McKnight. Crap, BYU doesn't even have a BRIAN McKnight, which would be nice for stuff like the National Anthem or pre-corded stadium announcements.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

It's a matter of perspective. Did anyone intend to say they were the best WR group ever RIGHT NOW, or that they ultimately would become such?Originally posted by TheBYUGuy View PostI'm not sure where to post this but this is a hot thread right now. Isn't it interesting that many said this was the best group of WRs ever at BYU and it is turning out to be the worst in BYU71's lifetime?
The former would be stark raving lunacy, the latter just modest hyperbole.

I live in constant fear that the rah rah "blue goggled", "lolyal", "true blue", "magic happens" crowd really does know what they are talking about.
That the various problems I point out are just the ramblings of an old senile man who is pissed at how much tickets cost for what is out on the field in the even years.
Therefor, believing Bronco is genius and all the things I have said about recruiting, talent, focus, et. la is wrong, I thought they would win 9, 8 at the worst.
I actually would not be in "holy crap" mode at being 1-3. It is the way we have gotten to 1-3 that has me in "holy crap" mode.

At this point, you have to give the rock to Heaps and grow with him. Hopefully, Heaps will watch film of the opposition instead of watching practice film of himself like a certain fat 2nd year qb currently playing in Southern California.

Goat states that Heaps will be all-conference by his junior year
BD asks which conference this would be? All Indy? Is there an honorable mention all indy? The Holy War is over, and Utah won - Federal Ute

QB play is paramount at BYU. Poor defense, poor receivers, poor running game, poor coaching. A great QB may not be able to overcome all of that, but pretty damn close if he's good enough.
When I look at what I expected this year to look like, and the implications it has for the future, QB play has been the most disappointing.
I was believing the hype I had heard that Heaps was the most polished freshman ever to play the game, and with the extra semester he had at BYU and spring ball, and all that that he'd be able to step in and be a 130ish pass rating QB. Average for the rest of the country, below average for BYU, but pretty good for a freshman. Feterik level. Barkley last year level. Beck sophomore year level.
By my observation, he's not even close to that level. Not even same ball park. Like so bad, if he wasn't the top recruit in the nation, you'd bench his ass immediately just to see if the next guy could do anything at all level.
So with the combination of the importance of the position and the disparity of actual vs forecast (and implications for the future if it doesn't turn around), that's why I say Heaps is biggest disappointment.

Outside of Heaps and whoever eventually becomes the go to tight end, I don't see any real playmakers. But I have been around BYU football enough to know a good qb and some good - albeit not great playmaking- wr's can do some serious damage. Especially if there is an adequate rush game and a tight end that can eat up the middle of the field.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostShow me where the play makers are and then I might start feeling better about Jake and BYU.
I think Quezada will be a decent rush threat and I am still believing a tight end will eventually step forward. I admit none of these are happening right before our eyes, but a lot of good college football coaches wanted Quezada, Apo and almost all of those tight ends on their team. They all couldn't have been wrong, right?
I think that Heaps looks worse because there is so much other youth at the other skill positions. Collectively they all are making each other all look worse than I really think they individually are. It is an issue where the youth is making the whole significantly less than the sum of the parts. I think that given Mendenhall's history and BYU's history it is ok to assume that as these kids, across the entire spectrum of the offensive skill positions, start to get older and more experienced into their sophmore and junior years the whole will be more than the sum of the parts.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.
