Honestly I would go to BYU in a second. I am one of those kids a big time recruit that grew up worshipping BYU, I would commit early and only be about a 3 star but by my senior year when I was 27 I would be an All-american.

I respect that. I am not surprised that many BYU fans would chose a different school if given the chance, but also not surprised that many would stick with the Y or the U.

I think the other is a much more interesting question. Imagine you're a kid from one of these areas where there's no "I've always dreamt of playing for X" school. Now where do you go? I think Junkie's right. It comes down to position to determine where you go among the top five or ten schools.

I wouldnt need to ask any of you if that were my intent. I would simply go and see which winning schools had holes that needed to be filled at each position. On the contrary, I think that is the least interesting question.

My question is basically stating....ok, you are a BYU fan or a Utah fan. But if you really could play anywhere, would you truly want to play at the Y or the U over every other place? In many instances the answer is no.

I get that if you are a QB, you are going to want to go a passing school that showcases your skills and has a good QB coach.

Ultimately, even the skilled position players have to go with their heart. Manti is a good example. He isn't going with notre Dame because of its recent success, the depth of coaching at LB, and because the head coach is a proven winner in college football. Ultimately, he followed his heart. He could have gone to a number of top notch schools that needed a top ranked player with his skills.

There's a difference between adopting a school because you want somebody to cheer for and being immersed in a cultural obsession your entire life.

I would look hard at a BCS school that was middle of the road that just went thru a new fabulous hire...you get a great coach, build on something and you are in a major conference with room to show your stuff on tv.

It doesn't matter where they live.....all the top guys have a school they want to play for...and they have probably wanted to play for that team for awhile.

Interesting. I still think it'd be a lot easier to get one of those kids to sell their souls and give up their "dream" school for a better offer. It's hard for me to envision a life outside the Sooner Nation (or something equivalent), though.

well, if you look at the top programs.....the majority of their rosters are in-state kids. OU seems to be an odd exception in that much of its rosters are filled with kids from Texas, but the state of Oklahoma is not a great recruiting area, anyway. I think by and large, most kids stay close to home. Te'o did not fit that description.

One thing for Te'o that was probably a factor. Unlikely that his family can afford to travel all over the country every week to watch the Irish. The next best thing is knowing that you can just turn on NBC and watch from your living room. No other school can match the media exposure that Notre Dame enjoys. If you have even basic cable these days, you can pick up every single Notre Dame game, home or away.

When I was in high school? Maybe not. Possibly Nebraska.
