That's what I want to know. If this girl never existed, how could he have been duped into believing (1) that they were dating and that he loved her, and (2) that she died?

Manti on national TV said he met her in person at a Stanford game and that in her illness he talked to her on the phone every night.

So the best case scenario here is that he was duped into thinking this cute girl on Twitter really liked him, was his internet girlfriend, plus maybe there was a faked phone call or two plus he significantly embellished the details of how they met and of his contact with her during her illness to make a better story. That's the best-case scenario for Manti.

Sometimes it takes me awhile to put pieces together, but after reading the article, there is no way I can reasonably say that he wasn't in on the hoax, at least some of it. That ND press release looks hastily written.

This has to be most bizarre sports story I've read in a long time. That boy has seriously downgraded his draft stock. I don't care how good he is. I bet a few teams will pass just because of the craziness factor.

It takes real talent, Heisman level talent, to publicly embarrass two major faiths with just one athlete.

So this chap was trading sweet nothings with another fellow on twitter, hoaxed the death to coincide with the ACTUAL day of his grandmother's death? If true, this is utterly repulsive. Can anyone here with a shred of morality consider hoaxing the death of a fake person on the same day your own grandmother passes away?

How did such a conversation take place, "hey, my grandmother died just now. let's have [insert girlfriend] die as well." ??

I certainly hope this is not what happened, for if so, this chap needs help. Serious help.
