  • Who does BYU have behind Steven Thomas?

EDIT: Oops, I meant Steven Thomas, I wish I could correct the thread title.

This guy sucked some serious ass on Saturday, does BYU have another option?

Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Maybe that is why he wasn't playing very well on Saturday.

Travis Uale he is 6'2 200 pounds. He did not enter the game until their were 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter. He finished with 3 tackles.

Steven Thomas played up until that point and finished with 1 tackle. Now remember BYUs scheme against Air Force is for the safeties to make plays. Andrew Rich finished with 14 tackles when they ran to his side. Thomas 1 tackle.

He was horrendous and I do not think it can be said enough.

Why wasn't Uale put in earlier? I saw Thomas repeatedly missing tackles so this couldn't have been a mystery to the coaching staff. I guess the coaching staff is hellbent on not appearing to be too knee-jerk, but good grief that was terrible.

Also, it seems like in years past the linebacking corps was able to fill in better and/or shed blocks against that Air Force option. Besides Van Noy, which other LBs should be seeing more time? Which LBs need to be benched?

I never played organized football, so I am not very good at picking out schemes or telling whether a linebacker had a good game or not or figuring out if the defense is in a two deep zone or whatever. Despite this, there were probably half a dozen times on Saturday where I said "Thomas got beat", or "Thomas should have made that play". I figure he must have played pretty poorly if I could tell that he did.

Great pic of Thomas "breaking up a pass" in the D News today. The best part is his arms are down and the TE is jumping over him to try and make a play. I think the caption should have said something like Thomas uses head to keep ball from being caught.

Thomas was horrible and hopefully will be benched for a long time.

Frazier was awful but the more I think about it and watch certain plays the more I think it was scheme and BYU was not prepared. Our D-ends are crashing inside on every play it is clear that they are taught to this against Air Force. Which leaves the OLB and Safety on an island. The OLBs did not make any plays and we saw what Thomas did.

regardless who is behind him I highly recommend he use a lot of ky; thomas doesn't seem capable of holding on to anything and he is always at the wrong angle. it could be painful

Thomas was one of the guys people on the board, TBS and I think even guys like Hans were raving about in fall camp.

Really? I heard the opposite. Bronco strongly implied that he didn't think Thomas was very good, but that he was the only one with any experience and knowledge.

Something worth mentioning but perhaps overplayed is the scholarship mismanagement. Unga bridges the gap on offense most certainly but I can't figure out how we seem to have very little experience in the front 7 on D. No way we should be this young and inexperienced IMO. I think it bodes well for the future but taking these kind of lumps just isn't necessary IMO.

I never heard this either. I heard Hans raving about Foote and Heaps but I never heard Thomas' name mentioned.
