I watched Doman in a few summer practices before his junior year and he was an absolutely awful passing QB. He was throwing ducks on quick routes. By the time his senior year came around, he was an above average passer. By the time he hit the NFL he was a very good passing QB. I don't know how this happened. I'd love to hear the full story from people close to the situation, but it was a remarkable transformation. Probably just a good athlete finally getting reps and the practice he needed in order to perform.
I have thought for a few weeks now that Bronco is waiting for the Utah State game to relegate Nelson to a much lesser role, but I'm not convinced now. I think Bronco, being a very, very smart dude, is going to wait and see how it plays out and then make a decision when a decision needs to be made.

I was surprised to see Heaps' passing efficiency was so low. It didn't seem like a 104. 104 is really bad for a BYU QB. Outside of maybe Beck/Berry 2003, we've never had a QB at that level for a season. Feterik was 130/140ish. The goods are in the 150's and the great's are in the 160's.
fwiw, I plugged in Heaps pass rating assuming two drops were caught, Wilson's TD drop and Jacobsen's 20 yard drop down the sideline. Those were the two that I think had no excuse for dropping. The new number is 136. Not great but not bad for a true frosh starting first game.

I remember Doman was throwing ducks durng his senior year. While they got the job done, it wasn't really pretty.Originally posted by Hazzard View PostI watched Doman in a few summer practices before his junior year and he was an absolutely awful passing QB. I thought that those were the only two that one could really blame the receiver entirely. I think Heaps will be great but there is no question that the offense is not real sharp with either qb yet, and I doubt they get there this year. I expect it to be pretty disjointed all year.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI was surprised to see Heaps' passing efficiency was so low. I will go on record and predict if BYU plays 5 WAC opponents every year, Jake Heaps will have numerous PER games of above 200 before his career is through!Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

Couldn't this have happened anyway? Why didn't UW do just as you suggest when Nelson was in the game? And if they did to this, it certainly didn't work as well as you suggest because BYU moved the ball pretty damn well with Nelson in the second half. Help me out here.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI think we also lose with Nelson only. With Nelson only I think it goes like this: the first half goes just like it did, but by the second half Washington has figured out they don't need to guard anyone 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. They keep a spy on Nelson, jam the corners, and stack the box. BYU fails to move the ball in the second half and Washington extends the half time lead. BYU loses.Last edited by smokymountainrain; 09-08-2010, 05:31 PM.I'm like LeBron James.

Incompetence? The UW DC said this of the QBs and Heaps in particular:Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostCouldn't this have happened anyway? With attention to detail like that it is no wonder why they lost."I really didn't notice him out there, quite honestly. I know he's No. 9 and he's just another player out there to me. I didn't notice anything. I don't know if his stats are good. I didn't really pay attention to how well he played. He might have done good or bad, I didn't really pay attention to him. (No.) 13 (Riley Nelson) was more of a threat, in our opinion, because he could run."

I think the quote "speaks volumes." UW's OC had trouble with Nelson. The fact is, Nelson is the better QB right now but is near the top of his potential. Heaps has an unlimited potential but is not quite as good right now. As Heaps sees game time and top level reps, he will surpass and supplant Riley.Originally posted by SCcoug View PostWith attention to detail like that it is no wonder why they lost.
Bottom line, they both threw for the same amount but Riley also ran for a bunch of yards and consequently the offense scored 15 points under him and only 6 under Heaps. The QB contest wasn't even close on Saturday.
