Not only do they play them, they are beating the crap out of them routinely for the last 20 years.

    That is not very respectful.

No kidding. The Illini tribe must be pissed.

I guess they tolerate bigots but don't tolerate racists, even if they are respectful racists.

          • Angry Japanese Dude's name-vs-mascot logic reminds me of this gem from the Utah Utes wiki page:

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_Utes

During the 1980s the Crimson Warrior, a Caucasian horseman dressed in Indian costume, would ride onto the field before home football games and plant a lance into a bale of hay. The warrior was considered more a symbol of the school than a mascot.

                  • As far as I know Wiscy has had that policy for 20-25 years. Though it allows for exceptions for conference members, traditional rivals, bowl games, etc. Basically Bucky pulls out the policy whenever they don't want to play someone like Utah.

Sure. Distinguishing between a team name vs. mascot is a smoke screen based on dumb, tortured logic. Which is why the Wisconsin law banning the use of native american team names in the state makes no such distinction.

That may very well be the case, but wasn't really what I was responding to. Funk said Wiscy was stupid because they have a policy not to play teams that have Native American mascots. YO said what about Illinois. I responded and said Illinois no longer has a Native American mascot.

As to the name fighting Illini, who exactly is going to get pissed about a made up name?

                        • Wisconsin has no choice about scheduling the Illini, they are in the same conference. The policy has to do with scheduling non-conference opponents. Native American mascots = not okay. Wanting homosexuals to be denied equal rights = okay. It doesn't really make a ton of sense to me.

                          • The Wisci policy never distinguished between names and mascots (and I don't think funk intended a distinction). Imanihonjin manufactured that out of thin air.

But it looks like the policy was rescinded in 2007.

                            So you are both wrong.

Have you returned your diploma to BYU with a cover letter explaining that you are angry and don't want a degree from a school that supports denying basic human rights to individuals based on sexual orientation and actively promotes discrimination against individuals based on sexual orientation? Seems like the right thing to do. I also don't understand why employers don't have a policy declining to hire individuals who obtained a degree from a university that supports denying basic human rights to individuals based on sexual orientation and actively promotes discrimination against individuals based on sexual orientation. After all, these individuals willingly chose to attend such a university.

Don't blame me for lack of precision. I made no claim on knowing what Wisconsin's policy is/was nor do I care. He said mascot and I merely noted that Illinois no longer has a Native American mascot.

You seem to put a lot of stock on the idea that name and mascot are interchangeable, so again I ask, who exactly is mad about the name Illini and why are they mad about a made up name?
