Plenty, I'm sure... I just like the dark blue a lot better. IIRC, the motivation, or at least part of the motivation for going darker blue is that people simply weren't buying the royal blue and the dark blue would sell better.Originally posted by dabrockster View PostWhat the hell is wrong with you!!!

I mean no offense to you, but there was some study done a while ago which labeled colors and a persons character trait.Originally posted by dabrockster View PostWhat the hell is wrong with you!!!

Black and dark blue were among the list of "manly man" colors. Royal Blue and pink fell into the pussy (cat) category.

Particularly against big-name programs. I mean, UTEP, SDSU, and Tulsa are big-time D-1 programs with monster fanbases. In addition, thursday and friday games basically pull gigantic numbers. I think you're on to something here.Originally posted by Scratch View PostIf BYU's fan base is so much more significant, how do you explain years of lackluster bowl TV ratings for BYU? Even comparing apples to apples, the numbers are low. I think I saw that this years Poinsettia Bowl had significantly fewer viewers than SDSU-Navy from a couple of years ago. Same bowl, same opponent, fewer viewers.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostParticularly against big-name programs. I see BYU stuff everywhere I go. BYU stuff is everywhere now from Walmart to Walgreens to Scheels.Originally posted by shoganai View PostAdmittedly I don't know as much about the retail aspect of things. I just know that BYU is notoriously stingy and controlling with its merchandising, and it negatively affects consumption.
I've heard arguments similar to byu71s a lot. The cultural connotations associated with displaying Utah gear or BYU gear is one theory.
Like you said, I recall merchandising advantages to Utah going back quite a while - even to the days when there was really no question that BYU dominated the sports market. In fact, the color, logo, and uniform adjustments BYU made back in 1999 were primarily driven by piss poor merchandising sales, and an attempt to boost things by modernizing the brand.
It did improve things a fair amount. Ironically BYU is now trying to achieve the same result with more throwbacks - the old circular Y logo, more original royal blue stuff with an older cougar head logo, etc.
This link provides a good view of all the iterations BYU has gone through. Notice how many different ones have been pulled out since 1999.

Utah, on the other hand, seems to have found a pretty consistent winner.

True, it is even available at Oakridge. The Pro does complain though that the stuff he buys at the first of the year is still there at the end of the year.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI see BYU stuff everywhere I go. BYU stuff is everywhere now from Walmart to Walgreens to Scheels.

Bowl ratings primarily trend with the strength of the team (as well as the timing). 11-1 vs 10-2 is going to draw better than 8-4 vs 6-6. Dec 30 is going to do better than Dec 22.Originally posted by Scratch View PostIf BYU's fan base is so much more significant, how do you explain years of lackluster bowl TV ratings for BYU? I agree that you have to eliminate as many variables as possible, which is why I looked at the Poinsettia Bowl from year to year, because that is going to have similar team strength and similar scheduling. Here's what happened this year:Originally posted by jay santos View PostBowl ratings primarily trend with the strength of the team (as well as the timing). 11-1 vs 10-2 is going to draw better than 8-4 vs 6-6. Nearly one million fewer viewers tuned into the 2012 Poinsettia Bowl.
The BYU/San Diego State Poinsettia Bowl drew 2.2 million viewers on ESPN, down 29% from TCU/Louisiana Tech last year (3.1M), and down 38% from San Diego State/Navy in 2010 (3.6M).
The game ranks as the least-viewed Poinsettia Bowl since at least 2006 (viewership prior to 2007 was not available).
In addition, Thursday’s telecast trailed the first two games of the bowl season — the Arizona/Nevada New Mexico Bowl (2.6M) and the Utah State/Toledo Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (2.8M).

Lets be honest, BYU fans were generally less interested this year than most. I dont think BYU commands a big TV market, but they do have more fans than Utah, and you have to look no further than stadium attendance. BSU probably commands more of a TV audience, but has less fans than BYU as well.

Here's another:

In other college football bowl news, the Air Force/Rice Armed Forces Bowl drew 3.3 million viewers on ESPN last Saturday, up 61% from BYU/Tulsa last year (2.0M)
