Hmmm, I don't know, I'm not that convinced. Those are teams with multiple rivalries (isn't Notre Dame a rival of just about everyone they play?), and Florida, Florida State, and Georgia play their "real" out-of-conference rivals at the end of the season.
Who is Utah's "real" rival?
Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

How does scheduling a difficult non-conference game interfere with a program's stated goal of winning a conference championship?
You can get beat up in the game, lose players to injuries. Most importantly, if you lose it is a huge emotional let down for the following week. For proof of a huge let down after losing a big difficult non-conference game see Virginia Tech last year for evidence after they lost to Boise St. No coach wants to take that risk when they are trying to win a conference championship. That is why they rarely take place.

Okay. I guess I can see that. But a big game like that could also be a big boost to a team's resume if they are in the hunt for the national title. Assuming BYU is a ranked team at the time.

That is fine, I just pointed out multiple rivalries games that aren't played at the end of the season.
Only and idiot will try argue that BYU isn't Utah's real rivalry but until anyone can point out a good reason as to why it benefits Utah to play this game in November then I will keep my way of thinking. This game will have as just as much excitement between the fans in September as it does in November. There is so much hatred in this rivalry right now, neither team and their fans will have a hard time getting excited about this game.
The arguments in this thread against a traditrional November rivalry game are so contrived, they should be sponsored by Deseret First Credit Union.
Do these arguments fly on buffalouteforum.com?

I'm for the Rivalry game being in September. It will be nice to see the game in shorts and a t-shirt. In fact all games in November should be outside of Utah, not in it. Take me to Hawaii and San Diego. Not SLC.
Non taken by the way. Please point out programs that are scheduling tough non-conference games in the month of November. Since that isn't happening, I will have to say that they majority of AD's across the country agree with me.
We can agree to disagree on the impact it can have on Utah's winning a conference title. If they have a chance to win the Pac 12, losing to BYU after putting so much energy and emotion into that game can be a huge let down and difficult to recover from the following week and they could drop a conference game they should have won.
I just disagree with you. I think it is extremely wise for Utah to keep the game at the start of the year. Playing the game in November only helps BYU. It does nothing for Utah and like I said, it hurts them more than helps them. I have yet to see one good argument saying how Utah would benefit from this. If I were Chris Hill, I would be pushing for it to be the 1st or 2nd game of the year every year.
Don't Florida vs Florida State happen late usually? Georgia vs Georgia Tech is every year late.

I agree with this, but it also supports the argument that the game will have the same potential negative impact on Utah's conference championship hopes regardless of when its played. The same problems that you noted before exist whether the game is played in Sept. or Nov.

I said this same thing to a co-worker the other day. I told him I am excited to go to this particular game in a T-Shirt and not freeze my butt off.

I also said Chris Hill should push to play this the 1st or 2nd week of the season every year. I personally think a loss in September is easier to overcome than one late in the year.
