  • High Noon in Lubbock - BYU vs Texas Tech 2025

For the first time in BYU history, we are playing in a game with both teams ranked in the top 10. ESPN Game Day. The whole nine yards.

The stakes are huge. National respect, CFP momentum, undefeated season, etc.

Vegas has us as 9-pt dogs. Take the cougars and the points. This team is resilient.

It sounds like as of right now the only hard out for this week is Sione Moa. It sounds like Esera and Phillips are expected to play. Kelly and LJ Martin are reported to be practicing this week with decisions to be made later in the week.

It doesn't sound like Damuni has been mentioned but I would expect him back by now. So I choose to go believing only Moa will be out this week!

My Ute-fan in-laws are coming to town this weekend. You have all been warned. For context, see the quote below from a post last year (updated last year's result in bold):

BYU almost always loses when my in-laws are in town. To the point that I have a few friends who ask me when my in-laws are coming to town so they can bet against BYU. Yesterday, while I had some time to kill, I went through old calendars and pieced together the BYU games that have happened while my in-laws are visiting. It's not pretty:

            2012 BYU vs Oregon State (L 24-42)
            2013 @ Utah State (W 31-14)
            2014 @Utah State (L 20-35)
            2015 @ Michigan (L 0-10000)
            2016 @ Boise State (L27-28)
            2017 @ East Carolina (L17-33)
            2018 vs Utah State (L 20-45)
            2019 @ Toledo (L 21-28)
2020 (COVID YEAR - No In Laws )
            2021 vs Boise State (L 17-26)
            2022 vs Notre Dame (L 20-28)
            2023 at TCU (L 11-44)
            2024 at Baylor (W 34-28)
They are here a bit later than normal, but that's because they were actually trying to come down on the weekend of the Utah game, and I basically told Mrs. D that weekend was off limits for them to visit us and told her to make up a reason why that weekend wouldn't work for us. At any rate, BYU is 2-10 when my in-laws visit us, with 8 of those 10 losses being blowouts. Do with that information what you will, but you've been warned.

High Noon on the east coast.

Less high 11:00 am CT, 10:00 am MT, and 9:00 am PT.

Pretty low 7:00 am Hawaii time where I’ll be tuning in from.

I like the early start in this case. Reduces the home-field advantage a little bit.

I legitimately love almost everything about my in-laws. They are fantastic people who have selflessly served for years and have bent over backwards to help their kids when needed. Being obnoxious Ute fans is their one flaw (and really, it's only my FIL. My MIL doesn't give a crap about sports, except maybe the Jazz). I could have done a lot worse in the in-law roulette. But once a year, my FIL bugs the hell out of me.

FWIW, i have enjoyed some BYU victories at their expense. In 2007, my brother and I watched "Magic Happens" in their living room, high-fiving as Harvey Unga steamrolled Steve Tate for the winning TD.

That's what I did 3 weeks ago! But unfortunately, Mrs. D won't let me tell her parents to [redacted] off for an entire 4 month period.

Lol My FIL has been retired for 15 years. My MIL, however, just recently retired. Sadly, she worked so long (because she wanted to, not because she had to) that they are both beyond their good traveling years. FIL is a farm boy who gets stir crazy when he is confined to the .37 acres I can offer him, so they visit for a few days, and usually when my kids are out of school. Hence a weekend. Sad!

Retired from farming? Or grew up on a farm (like my dad)?
