Wetzel just posted an article on the uofutah PE deal.
Interesting points:- He expects more of these to come out because college sports has a spending problem.
- uofutah athletics ran a 15.8% deficit ($17 million) last year and collects $6.2 million annually from students to support the department.
- Football and men's basketball are the only profitable programs (no surprise).
- Otro will want a return and will likely pressure the new entity to do things that will provide that (including cutting programs).
- Michigan calls this arrangement a "payday loan." Hard to argue that.
Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Michigan and USC have expressed MAJOR opposition to the Private Capital deal that is in the works for the Big Ten. And the Big Ten proposal is much less invasive than what Utah wants to do as the investors would only have a 10% stake in Big Ten Enterprises and I don't think any spots on the board. This is mostly bluster, but Michigan noted they would explore going independent if the only way to stay in the conference is accept the proposal in its current form.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostWetzel just posted an article on the uofutah PE deal.

I'm far from a Michigan or USC fan but I'm happy for their opposition to this trend.

Michigan and USC are likely thinking, "Why should we take on this risk, as little as it is, when we don't want or need it, and it will only serve to feed the management inefficiencies of our league mates?"Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

Title IX will have a say in this before it is all said and done.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostWetzel just posted an article on the uofutah PE deal.

My data may be old, but because football takes up so many scholarships, the men’s Olympic sports usually have very few scholarships to give out compared to women’s sports. Which would mean men’s sorts would be disproportionately more on the chopping block than women’s sports. But I’m open to being wrong. I just know several guys that played college baseball in Texas and they said very few guys on the team had full scholarships. Maybe NIL has changed that paradigmOriginally posted by The_Tick View Post
As long as available scholarships are equal, that is all that matters. Not the number of programs.
That is how I don't see how this is going to be successful.

It would not surprise me if part of what eventually comes from the NIL situation is an attempt to pass legislation requiring that NCAA schools spend the same amount of NIL funds on female recruits as male recruits. Because, unlike private salaries in the NBA vs the WNBA, in the NCAAs there is a statutory requirement preventing discrimination based upon gender and promoting gender fairness in college sports . Just one of the reasons I think there will be a "salary cap" of sorts on NIL funds, eventually.Originally posted by Moliere View Post

Not surprising that the programs on top of the money pile see no problem with the situation and oppose efforts to bridge the widening gap between them and other programs.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostMichigan and USC are likely thinking, "Why should we take on this risk, as little as it is, when we don't want or need it, and it will only serve to feed the management inefficiencies of our league mates?"
But then, if other programs do it, then they probably will have to do it too. It's a classic prisoner's dilemma situation: even if everyone would be worse off if PE gets involved, they'll probably all end up doing it anyway.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν
