2024 BYU Football - Year 2 in the Big 12

So far Retzlaugh has been a turnover machine. The one thing a winning QB can't do is turn the ball over. Turnovers were definitely an Achilles heel during the Jake Heaps/Riley Nelson years and became Tanner Mangum's downfall as well. JR has demonstrated through his 7 games that is prone to coughing the ball up. 10 turnovers in 7 games is not a sustainable rate for a QB that wins 7- 8 games against a P4 schedule.

He was bad in the SMU game. 111 pass efficiency can't really be brushed off that easily. . Could be that SMU's defense was really good but I don't think that accounts for all of it. He was very good against SIU and had a pretty good game against Wyoming. Overall it's 154 for the season but it's harder to believe it stays there against a Big 12 schedule.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostBYU fans are delusional/irrational about Jake Retzlaff. When he's good he's plenty good to get us 6 or 7 wins. His final numbers in that Wyoming game were good. But he was a whisker away from an entirely different game. It feels like that's how every week will be with him. I just have to get used to it.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostWhen I watched the SIU game I thought Retzlaff was good enough for BYU to win 7 games as a decent game manager. I didn't watch either of the last two games so I don't know if my opinion would change. I think KSU has a pretty dynamic qb and a better offense than BYU has faced this year. I am in the camp with this BYU team who believes the data so far this year indicates BYU isn't a bad team but we really don't know how good BYU is.
My criticism of BYU's coaching staff is IMO the inconsistency. IMO, they struggle with the grind of getting their team ready to play week in and week out against good teams. The grind for this team starts this next game. I know the RBs are dinged up and that will be a problem but that is part of the game- we don't know the injury situation as BYU keeps it under wraps but other than LJ and Ropati I think BYU is pretty healthy going into this game-especially on defense. It seems to me BYU has to use Retzloff as a runner and hopefully he can complete enough passes with that to move the ball enough to win. It has been repeated oft but I think for BYU to win they must win the turnover battle. I am excited to see what this defense can do against a good P4 offense.
Many questions- can Retzlaff play well against good competition, how good is BYU's D, can the coaching staff develop a good gameplan the players can execute to keep the game competitive despite the injuries at RB and Retzlaff's limitations as a QB etc. It has been a fun 3 games, I tire of much of BYU's fanbase whining but I have accepted it, but the reality is this game will tell us more about what type of team BYU is this year than the 3 games up to now.

Some might say that is the idea.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View Post
Agreed. But then that might cut his time short.

Retzlaff vexes me. Last season he took OU and OkieState to the edge of winning (despite that horrible pick 6). He is awesome on some plays (that TD pass to Lassiter on Saturday and that long TD pass to JoJo against SIU) but then
on other plays. I'm an eternal optimist, so I'm happy to ride with him hopefully expecting that he'll work it out for the better. Yes, getting him into the run game ala WYO is a good plan.

KState is favored by 7 as the week begins. BYU has completely smashed each of the first three spreads so far. Not sure they can do that again but the odds makers seem to be adjusting. This line would probably favor KState by at least 20 points if this were 2 or 3 weeks ago. The offense still has work to do but the defense might keep us in it long enough. We'll see.
