Easy bet on BYU, but I think the OU is in the sweet spot where it could go either way.

Retzlaff has played well against lower levels of competition, and has played below where he needs to against better competition. Has he looked like what we've come to expect from a QB against Wyoming and Southern Illinois? Absolutely. Has he met the bar against Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Oklahoma, West Virginia and SMU? I don't think he has. The majority of our games from here on out are against teams that fall in the later category, not the former.

I have to primary criticisms – consistency and ball security. On the first, his decision making too often has been poor, and there have been way to many throws that I'd expect a D1 QB to complete with ease that have been sailed or thrown in the dirt. To be fair to Jake, he's had a few drops that have hurt him too – so offensive struggles aren't fully on him. But he needs to more consistently be right in his reads, and more consistently make the throw that's there to be made. Secondarily, he's been a bit too careless with the ball at times – both in throws and fumbles. I think this is an area he's improved from last year – but it's also an area where he needs to be better. His two INTs v. SMU were both careless – he has to take better care of the dang ball.

I can accept waiting for a more final judgment until after Kansas State. I hope he proves me wrong – because him being an above average QB benefits BYU both this year and next.
