Hypothetical BYU scheduling as an independent

What's interesting to me about that is that Texas was again involved in this. They're giving up a home game to help BYU. I'm sure they'll have no problems filling that slot, but I'm starting to see a pattern.

UCF announces home and home with BYU, starting 2011 in Provo. I wish it were USF instead.

Just heard that Chris Hill sent paperwork to BYU today to try and schedule a 5 year agreement with next year's game being the first game of the season. Don't know details about location. We'll see if it pans out.

Respect to Chris Hill. I really thought that saying they would keep playing BYU was lip service and that when push came to shove the game wouldn't happen next year. I am glad to see it will.

Someone said a Labor Day Monday game, I like that idea a lot.

Wasn't Boise on the schedule for 2011 as well? I didn't know UCF was in Conference USA. I thought they were a Sun Belt team. But it is a game in Florida. Like someone said on this board, picking up games that could be potential recruiting hot spots is smart. I really like the idea of picking up games with teams in Texas and in California.

Apparently the Boise series doesn't start until 2012.

Maybe I'm amplifying my own thoughts on this, but I've personally never cared about conference titles. Last night during the Utah broadcast, one of the announcers said that Utah had won ___ number of titles and I had to sit down and really concentrate on how many MWC titles BYU had won.

Big numbers can be difficult to work with.

So what does BYU (and their fans) care about in the future when they open the season 1-2?

On the other hand, Pac 10, SEC, etc. I think those really mean something. Winning the MWC until recently meant not a whole lot.

I think games against rivals are significantly more interesting than worrying about the conference title race.

UCF's a C-USA team and they went 8-5 last year. They're better than all but maybe one of the WAC teams we're scheduling. They're probably around the level of an Air Force. They're an improvement over the five bottom dwelling MWC teams.

What a bunch of horseshit. No one cares about winning the MWC title with a Las Vegas bowl bid on the line (well, actually it wasn't on the line since BYU always went there anyway regardless of whether it won the conference).

If BYU and Utah are both heading into the their respective games with each other, none of these guys are thinking "I can't wait to beat [BYU and Utah] and get my hands on that MWC trophy."

Since we've got all this flexibility now as an independent, I think we should start scheduling games in the home towns of all our prominent athletes. It would largely negate any home field advantage. 12 home games a year!
