  • Will Heaps Transfer

    If he doesn't start?

This is a topic that local radio guys were discussing when I drove to lunch.

I personally think that if Nelson is chosen to start over Heaps, then Heaps should transfer to somewhere he can play immediatly.

Do you really believe that? In your short time here I haven't pegged you as an instigator. But saying that a freshman QB should transfer if he's not immediately given the keys seems like an irrational opinion. Especially since he'd likely have to sit out a year if he did transfer, meaning he wouldn't see the field any quicker with his new team.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

It's clear that both QBs are going to play. If Heaps wants to be a wienie and transfer because Nelson plays a situational QB sub role, then I guess he can.

Odds are dang good he wouldn't start again next year if Riley starts this year. Yea, I wouldn't blame him for considering a transfer.

I am sure he is hearing what I am hearing. He clearly has the most talent and ability to run a BYU offense. Why then would Nelson get the nod. Maybe that is wrong thinking, but given young kids and parents, I can see how that would affect him.

Of course he won't. And there is nowhere he can go to play immediately.

Heaps won't transfer. I think Riley starts against Washington, but after that? Who knows. I don't think even Bronco knows.

Man.. Those radio guys sure have a hard time thinking of things to say, so they come up with that little nugget...

First off, buddy, as an ALUF I'd like to think that I am above "instigator" tactics.

Heaps' stated goal (correct me if I'm wrong) is to play in the NFL. He has also chosen to forgo a mission in order to get early playing time at the collegiate level to further progress toward the NFL end goal. If Nelson starts then, Heaps is faced with the possibility of starting as late as his Jr. year.

In todays college quarterback environment starting early and getting PT is paramount. As such my opinion is that he, in his own best interests, should transfer if he doesn't start.

Oh also, can't he just burn his redshirt year instead of sitting?

Depends on when he enrolls in his new school. I believe NCAA rules mandate a one-year period of ineligibility for transfers. So in the highly unlikely event Heaps went elsewhere, he wouldn't be eligible to play until after he had been at his new school for one calendar year.

I can't tell if the "buddy" reference is a finger-in-your-chest sort of remark or a genuine expression of friendship. It would be much easier to discern you tone if you'd use the provided emoticons!

Regardless of Heaps stated goal of playing in the NFL (btw, how many college FB players do not have that goal?), what is the evidence that he'd have any better chance at starting as a freshman at any other top quality school? I'm assuming that he wouldn't transfer to any other non-BCS team. He wouldn't be starting at Washington, Tennessee or UCLA. I'm not sure I see how transferring would really boost his chances at being drafted, at least not in terms of early playing time.

                        No, he won't.

The dude is invested in Provo. He has siblings there. His parents got a place there.

He'd be frustrated, but he won't transfer.

                          Thanks for the clarification.

I hope that the BYU coaches are not refraining from naming a starter to preclude Heaps from starting at another school next year. I doubt that Bronco would meddle with things like that though.

In defense of Wally, the radio guys were discussing this topic this morning, which normally I dismiss as muckraking. However, two interesting points were brought up:

                              1. Heaps & Family suffered a lot for passing up Washington for BYU. A lot. I wouldnt characterize it as persecution, but I think that family fled the area. They are anticipating some sort of payback for their suffering.

                              2. Hans sees Riley Nelson as mistake and error-prone, although he doesn't attribute it to the player personally; more that Nelson's seat-of-the-pants scrambling gives rise to lots of sacks and chain turnovers. Any QB with that style of play has huge risk/reward. Hans is particularly irate that Riley is showing so well during fall camp, because Jaime Hill is spending zero time instructing his 1s to counter Riley's scrambling, since that is so easily defended in a game situation. I think he is worried that Riley looks good now, which will propel him to the first string position, and when faced with a couple of defensive spies in a real game will cough up the ball all day long. Faced with this scenario, Heaps & Co will be complaining loud and long.
