It is. $250,000 is a permanent endowment for a grant in aid. The scholarship will continue on indefinitely without any need to touch the principal.

I believe Utah has been doing this for sometime. I'm not sure that the scholarships carry the donor's name on them, but athletes do meet their sholarship sponsors.

I don't know when BYU started doing it but it was 2002 at the latest.

This isn't unique to BYU. At many schools you can look in the game program or media guide and see what player is on a specified scholarship.

At Oregon they have a couple of get togethers during the year with the athletes and donors.

It is nice to see that BYU is starting to copy fund raising tactics that work from other schools, instead of viewing being a BYU fan as a privilege.

You do realize Utah has as many QBs taken in the first round of the NFL Draft (two) as BYU, right?

So I'll see you your QB reunion (Alex Smith, Lee Grosscup, Scott Mitchell and Pokey Allen) and raise you a RB, WR or DB reunion.

Sorry, but it's pretty clear that they have us beat in the QB department.

I tend to agree though I'd prefer he be golfing w/ pants rather than w/o.

Since "see you" means that one is calling or matching the current bet, your initial declaration seemed to suggest that Smith, Grosscup, Mitchell and Allen are the equivalent of Nielsen, Wilson, McMahon, Young, Bosco, Lindsley(!), Detmer, etc. DU is all about journalistic precision and fidelity to poker fundamentals. As you note later, that was not your intent, but the unintended implication seemed clear to DU who spends most of his time around felt-covered tables when he's not (bless him) bird-dogging Hallellujah.

Hold 'em analogy: Yes, BYU has a better starting hand when it comes to QBs. But it's not pocket aces for BYU, to Utah's 7-2 offsuit, as so many BYU fans would like to believe. More like 8-9 suited for Utah, and A-Q suited for BYU. So BYU puts out a pretty big bet on the flop by bringing out QB history, but is too ignorant to realize that Utah has the chips to call to call that bet. Not only that, through depth at other positions, BYU gets clobbered over the top with a reraise it can't call in a million years.

Synopsis: If I were a BYU fan, I wouldn't make such a big deal about overwhelming success at one position. At least not to Utah fans. We'll promise to be as impressed by your QBs so long as you do likewise for our history at RB, WR and DB.

Okay, you win. We will stop celebrating any success that BYU has without taking equal time to praise the myriad successes of the Utes. It was selfish of us to talk about QB prowess in a thread dedicated to historical QB's at BYU without also acknowledging the Utah Rb, WR, and DB's. Surely that is the first thing most think of when comparing our QB's to Utah's.
