  • I....do not know what to think of this. Someone tell me if I am pleased.

    • Seems similar to Slovis in the sense that he had a great start to his career, got beat out the next season and sputtered out after transferring. If nothing else he should beef up the QB room.

      • I mean cool, but I'm more concerned with whom we are recruiting, to be honest. Enough w the mediocre transfers.

Transfers are a part of recruiting anymore.

I mean I'm not sure he is any less accurate than Slovis, but I do know he can run. So that's probably an upgrade.

            • QB transfers from Baylor are awesome. Don’t be afraid to get your hopes up way high.

              • So with the B12 conference logo and a pile of cash...this is what we get? Sigh.

I don't think it's from a lack of trying. But quality WB transfers cost a lot of money and there are a lot of higher profile suitors without an honor code out there. I know BYU has missed on recruiting QB the last couple of years. I'm afraid we are entering a good QB desert.

                        • I will say in 2021 playing against us for Baylor he made our defense look pretty bad but it didn't hurt them that their running game also had its way with us. Also apparently he battled injuries while at USF that probably affected his play. When we beat him while at USF in 2022 he did not look good.

I look at this as the type of move that elevates the floor of our QB room this upcoming season. He'll come in as the QB with the most game experience having played a B12 schedule and had some success as a starter. I don't think he's a home run, but I'd say he's definitely the leader in the clubhouse going into next season to be the starter. The biggest thing we saw last year was the difference a mobile QB made in BYU's offense – not even needing to be a true dual threat guy, but at least having some ability to run the ball forces defenses to defend all 11.

I think Retzlaff struggled adjusting to the level of competition he played against – game speed, not being able to rely on his ability to run, etc. hurt the offense down the stretch. If there was one benefit of playing him down the stretch, I think it was helpful to see that he wasn't there yet - too many mistakes to rely on him as the clear cut starter going into the season.

My guess is it'll be an open competition and I don't think they'll move forward with Gerry as the starter unquestioned, but it's probably his to lose. I think Retzlaff can show he's made some strides of understanding the offense better and eliminating mistakes if he wants to be considered. I wouldn't count out either Burton or Hagen either as longer-term options.

I wouldn't expect the continued 1-year Transfer Portal QB to be the long-term solve. I think they knew Conover wasn't the guy, so they had to hit the portal for an immediate starter (Slovis) and find someone who they thought could take over (Retzlaff). That they aren't sold on him is the primary reason for Bohanon IMO, less so the younger guys (Burton, Hagen, etc.).

                            Just my take.
