Probably about where BYU should be ranked. Utah still above Florida is why preseason rankings are so dumb. The result of actual head to heads are rendered almost meaningless. This isn’t even (much) of a Utah crack. Usually things like that hurt teams like the BYU or UU; this year it’s working in their favor.

And ND has fallen completely off the radar... Too bad. It would have been nice to have beat them while they were still ranked.

I'm hoping their train wreck season will lower prices on the secondary market for the Vegas game but ND fans don't appear to be selling yet.

Prices won’t drop yet. Those who are already planning vacations will hold on to tickets. What it may affect is day-of sales, from locals who bought a bunch of tix hoping to make a big profit. Last minute price is going to depend on how BYU does in Eugene.

Early money going for BYU next week. Oregon opened as 6.5 point favorites but the line almost immediately moved to 3.5.

I follow BYU games on the CFB subreddit. Last night's game was massive. In spite of the late start/ending, the BYU Baylor game thread had the 3rd most comments of any game yesterday

Alabama Texas had by far the most with over 63k comments. That's is an insanely busy thread in CFB. Next highest was aTm App state with 10.2k and then BYU BU with 10.1k

Most other game threads were 3k or under

I know I am a squish, but I was really touched by what Jaren did. That is great leadership and character.

In the post-game, Kalani said that in the locker room after the game he called Oldroyd up to the front and told him that he did some great things in the game and he has done so much for the program over the years and that they all love him. I love the culture that Kalani has built.

At first in Kalani's tenure as HC I approached his love mantra etc a bit skeptically. It was his style of coach speak in a language meant for today's youth. Time exposes us all. Kalani is no charlatan. I think I can give him the greatest compliment I can give a coach-the dude genuinely has a lot of LaVell Edwards in him. You can't bullshit folks who spend as much time around each other as Kalani spends around his staff and players. Kalani will almost always get the best out of everyone in his organization because of his genuine concern for their welfare. It is not pretended just to exact that performance- it is genuine.

I am as impressed with him as a human being as I am a coach. I don't have a requirement that BYU coaches be great human beings. I love Mark Pope and think he is a great basketball coach but I don't believe him to be the person Kalani is. I hope Kalani gets all his wildest dreams realized at BYU- it is great when nice guys genuinely finish first.

Two games in and BYU is ranked fairly high.

My thoughts so far-

1.) Biggest surprise IMO has been Chase Roberts. I don't think BYU was without its two best receivers on Saturday. He is really, really good already.

2.) Not a lot about the team vs USF surprised me. I wasn't surprised we beat Baylor by 6 but I was surprised how the game went.

3.) I think the defense is much improved now that the key players are healthy. I still think BYU ought to be able to better recruit at the DL where even this year I don't see NFL talent (how long was the gap between Khyris Tonga and the previous interior DL NFL player?) , but the performance so far this year has been grand IMO. Really impressed with the linebackers and the defensive backfield. I did think that when Baylor went with their speed back they exposed BYU a bit more so I have some concerns vs Oregon and I think the Ducks will be faster and more explosive than Baylor. Baylor has Grimey's influence and wants to win with strength-and no matter how much the linebackers and defensive backfield are good-BYU always is more competitive, IMO, versus high end strength and power than high end speed.

4.) I thought the offense was well coached and executed on Saturday-although with Puka Nacua it has an element of explosion that would have opened it up significantly IMO. I am skeptical he is back Saturday-or if he is back to what level of himself he will compete, but once he is back I think this offense will continue to roll even good teams. Baylor did have a great DL and a very good defense. I don't expect Oregon to have the same strength and toughness as Baylor so I think BYU ought to be both better able to run the ball and be more explosive in the passing game-even if they are without Nacua and Romney.

5.) BYU can beat Oregon but they are going to have to play cleaner than they did Saturday IMO. Even if they turn the ball over once. Fewer penalties and really consistent smart football. Gotta get touchdowns when they get down the field. Score on every opportunity where BYU gets beyond Oregon's 30 and only one FG.

6.) I was once again overwhelmed at what LaVell Edwards has given us. What an atmosphere and what a spectacle to behold when BYU can play legitimate high level football-God bless that man!

i'm not convinced Romney is a lock for one of those top two spots either. but the absence of Puka can't be overstated. he's the one guy Hall can throw it to 40-50 yards down the field - and either get separation or make a play on an underthrown ball. he's also the one guy who can get significant yards after catch. it's hard in football to consistently sustain long drives over four quarters. hence the offense only scoring 20 points in regulation. the best offenses make big plays. Puka is really the only big play (again, talking 40+ yard chunks) threat for BYU until somebody else proves otherwise.

My buddy and I were talking about this after the game. Romney just got passed up on the depth chart.

And is Puka the best offensive player on the team? My buddy seems to think so, and I can't argue the point. He also thinks Hall doesn't read the middle of the field--that it's a blind spot in his game. Thoughts?
