I'm actually with the Utes. I wouldn't want to be the lame duck in the conference. Look forward too long and you can lose sight on what you should be doing in the present.

Why not? What's the possible down side of sticking around one more year? The upside, clearly, is that you've still got money coming in the door from the conference. Is there a fear that the PAC changes their minds in 2011 before the Utes can start play? That can't be it.Originally posted by beelzebabette View PostI'm actually with the Utes. So college football is all about the money?Originally posted by falafel View PostWhy not? What's the possible down side of sticking around one more year? Not to snub my nose at 1.2 mil, but it is not a massive amount of money to walk away from. You can start telling recruits that you are going to play in the Pac-11-2 as a freshman. Utah will still get the gate cuts from the road conference games, they will likely be able to charge more for home games, which will help decrease the financial gap.Originally posted by falafel View PostWhy not? Being a lame duck for 1 year is palatable, 2 years.....distracting, which is why I think that CU eventually negotiates out to join in 2011 as well."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

It's not a stretch to think they could make up the $1.2mil they would get in the MWC from sponsorship.
Also, I think CU is working a deal to join the PAC in 2011.

Colorado will be joining the PAC-12 in 2011.Originally posted by falafel View PostThis is odd to me. Why would there be urgency to jump from the MWC in 2011, particularly when CU won't be joining at the same time (btw, is this still correct?)? Why would the PAC require Utah to "get here ASAP" and why would Utah be so eager to leave, especially since it means they aren't getting a full pay-day from the league yet. Not official, but based on this story from BuffZone.com that quotes Dan Beebe, highly likely.Originally posted by falafel View PostIs that official?"I don't know the origin of said bitch booming."-Art Vandelay

Of course it makes sense to Dan Beebe, he's on the receiving end of CU's buyout.Originally posted by BoylenOver View PostNot official, but based on this story from BuffZone.com that quotes Dan Beebe, highly likely.
And if it actually happens, my argument loses steam. But since at the time of CU's announcement it wasn't certain, it seems an odd move for the U. It also makes me sad to see them rushing for the MWC ext.

It is only going to cost them their share of the $35M to $40M early exit payment...Originally posted by falafel View PostIs that official?
and it could be a done deal. Maybe the Pac-10 will spot them.Liquidated damages. The exit payment from Nebraska and Colorado to the league has been estimated at $35 million to $40 million.
Edit: BTW, Dan Beebe says Colorado should be in Pac-10 by 2011.Last edited by Uncle Ted; 07-27-2010, 05:46 PM."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

Which isn't the case. Dr. Hill said the same thing on Aug 5 on the radio in that the PAC-10 wanted them to start in 2012 with Colorado, and that Hill responded that "for various reason" the Utes "needed" to start in 2011. Utah is even taking a financial hit to do so in not getting any league money, from either league, for a year.Originally posted by falafel View PostOkay, well then we're back to the main issue. Why leave now, unless of course the PAC is demanding the Utes come immediately?
Nope. This is all being driven by Hill wanting to start in 2011. I just can't figure out why it is so urgent.Originally posted by falafel View PostI can't see any real benefit to the PAC to add one team in 2011, and one team in 2012. Is the MWC kicking them out? That seems unlikely.
