PolyCoug, I hope you stick around on this board. Where have you been?

Well, I have a bad but common Polynesian habit of being way too loyal, in situations where cutting ties would benefit my soul (for example I supported Gary Crowton till the end... in my defense, I personally knew and liked the guy), and have been living in the desert know as CougarBlue for the better part of the past decade. Finally looked for a new home a couple months ago, and after a short stint on Cougarboard (that place is full of crazy), found this one while searching for any hope that BYU would maybe get a shot at the Big 12. Discussions (and banter) here have been my favorite.

I'm a big fan of the back and forth of Ute's and Cougars, and just get a kick out of both schools collections of crazies with Crimson or Blue goggles. And dealing with this thread, really hate the thought of any of that nastiness and those bigoted comments by both sides going away, even if its just a year. For me, I love a good fight... been in plenty. And the uniqueness of religion with the rivalry in a unique state is what will always put the schools on the National radar... I embrace it for what it is, and hope recruits continue to notice and stay home. Just being in the PAC doesn't mean popular (I heard there is another school in Washington besides the Huskies... but maybe its just legend).

I love to hate the Utes, and respect them too. I like them going to the PAC (though I'm riddled with jealousy, and am just coming out of my month long depression), and just pray that BYU can continue its run of top 25's to keep the rivalry interesting enough that ESPN and the rest of the nation still want to see it. C'mon AD's, make 2011 work!!!

I aim to serve, YO, you know that, so I am surely pleased to hear that I've entertained you. I just need a hug now and then, and you are very stingy with those. Not that I care or anything.

But in the end it makes for some great material when its game-time. If a BYU player doesn't live up to code he's a hypocrite, if he's professing his beliefs and how its affected his game he's self-righteous.. I get a kick out of it, I've dealt with the heckling and arguing at plenty of games, it's only turned to fist fights, for me, with Wyoming fans (and a few Oregon fans at the Vegas bowl... but I hung out with a huge crowd of them after).

I think its all blown out of proportion, and aside from an occasional Mad Max moment, really is pretty harmless and good fun. The media is the one that wants it to be "The Holy War", and clings to anything angry.

But I say again, with the day's of Utah becoming more of a BCS hotbed of recruiting approaching, I think the rivalry game, and the attention it gets, will help kids feel a loyalty to their in-state schools and hopefully stick around, rather than saying a couple games at home during their career is enough to go somewhere else.
Nice post, and I agree. I think that recent claims that the rivalry has "become too bitter" and that the time off would help "cool things down" are nonsense. I especially agree that the media is selective of what becomes representative of the rivalry as of late.

My favorite news story occurred 2 seasons ago (I think) when a Utah fan went on the evening news to report that a BYU fan broke his nose. (Why any man would publicly admit his wussiness is beyond me.) He obviously thought that he was making a point about those "self-righteous" and "hypocritical" cougars. As a Utah man, I was mildly embarassed.

Ha ha ha... nice, just like I wouldn't feel good about beating down some of the raging drunk Utes that have come at me. A small gust of wind could knock over some of those guys after their happy time at the Pirate Ship. A Utah staple of tailgating, that I've never quite understood... but have never been disappointed by, in terms of entertainment. Barely better than the Red Bus with beer taps on the back. See... I need this rivalry for more than just the game.

And no, not a lawyer... but son of a gear-head. I've lived my many years, in Broadcasting.

Hey now... Typically asking a Tongan if he's Samoan (Alema) is great way to start a brawl, but if I was half that good lookin, I'd be in good shape. Alema's a good friend, but I'm more a behind the scenes guy. Used to be a great insider until I left KSL, now I'm just a fan... loaded with opinions, and... wanting to punch Dan Beebe in the face for some odd reason (which I really don't know why).

Sorry, I do apologize. To be fair, though, your name is not TonganCoug or SamoanCoug, so I was confused. About Alema, I did see him at the gym a few years ago. He looked pretty fit at the time.

You should have known that PolyCougar isn't Alema Harrington because Poly said that he is the son of an engineer. Everybody knows that Alema's dad is Ben from Hawaii Five-O.
