I think they would do some soft money transaction to account for it. When I worked for a department at BYU we had to pay the telecommunications department for telephone and network connections with essentially soft money. This funded their budget. I suspect it works the same in some way or another with the Marriott Center."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

If there's a strategic reason to do it, sure. Is there a strategic reason to report that BYU athletics is profitable? The way they do their accounting, I think most likely either a) they don't care and do it the easiest way or b) they want to show BYU athletics are about break even. They don't even count parking or food revenue from FB and BB games in the athletic budget.Originally posted by Ted Nugent View PostI think they would do some soft money transaction to account for it. Sure... that might explain why BYU athletics is not profitable but the budget shows that BYU cares about $35.6M worth about athletics which is comparable to other college athletic budgets like our friends to the North. That is really the point here. So maybe Utah doesn't care much about athletics as well or BYU does actually care about athletics. It seems more of the latter. Also, if BYU didn't care as much about athletics then I would suspect they would support as about as many varsity sport programs as CU (or less) which is around 10. I believe BYU has about twice that currently.Originally posted by jay santos View PostIf there's a strategic reason to do it, sure. I don't know whether this "BYU Insider" is full of crap or not, but I guarantee you that if BYU doesn't land in a BCS conference in the next couple of years, the spin from a host of BYU fans will be that we never wanted in the BCS because BYU has a unique mission. What's depressing about this post is that it very well could have a lot of truth. They axed Ricks's athletic program.
I think there's probably a fairly strong tie to both donations and the quality of admission applications that come as a result of BYU athletics. Not an insignificant portion of a college experience (IMO) comes from college sports.
Nearly every LDS estate planning attorney who's also a BYU alum that I know are huge BYU sports fans, much more than the average alum (I can't explain why, but it's something I've noticed). I also know that these guys funnel a lot of money into BYU. There's no doubt in my mind that their enthusiasm would be enormously diminished if BYU gets rid of its football and basketball programs.
(BTW, some of you know that I posted this in another forum).Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
