ANd Lebowski, good shift. I am not beign critical of him, your origianl post was abotu the pettiness of criticizing his delivery. I merely pointed out that such criticism arose in a context you were ignoring.
Ok, but by 2009, the hard work (building relationships, reviving the program, etc) had already been done and it was just a matter of waiting for the opportunity.

I guess a better question is this: What if he left in 2000? Are the Utes still in? 2004? 2008? At what point, did the Utes become a "lock"?

I didn't intend to imply that he pulled off some last-minute miracle.

My short term memory isn't what is used to be and I am too lazy to re-read the thread. I will take your word for it.

      • I bet people aren't now going to gang tackle creekster and say he got his nuts handed to him like they do me. I bet PAC won't do his thing to creekster lining up two post excerpts side by side (out of context) to show seeming conflict. Creekster is part of the protected class here.

Well, I looked and couldn't find two posts that conflicted with each other; that's what happens when the targeted author uses words as scalpels, not sledgehammers.

And sir, you are one of the most respected and universally-read members of this fine forum, so stop the sniveling; it's unbecoming. I'll even treat you to breakfast next time you're in the Bay Area. I'm unaware of a decent Eggs Benedict offering in the neighborhood, but the local eatery produces a fine McMuffin.

This is kind of an ungenerous view of a life's work. Some would call it preposterous.

                  • Let me just point out that SU was the first to bring up the issue of eloquence in an AD/coach. While I noticed Hill's fumbling (and more than that, the lame jokes and hickish delivery--it was like a bad sacrament meeting), I didn't say anything about it (and didn't know anything was said here about it) until SU pointed out how embarrassing Holmoe was. Like IPU said, it probably sounded much worse on the radio than if you were there in person.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I watched it on TV and didn't notice any fumbling. I noted below that Hill had gotten very little sleep for weeks because of the unfolding expansion saga -- including while on a European vacation. You all need to cut the guy some slack.

Slack cut--Sheez! Check the posts--I didn't say a thing until SU jumped on Holmoe's statement (and I still don't get what SU was criticizing). I don't have anything against Hill--it seems like he's done a good job.

But that's Creekster's whole point - while he deserves credit for building the program to the point where the PAC had interest, he almost certainly deserves no credit for "negotiating" Utah's way into the PAC. I (or I suppose, even you) could have stepped into Hill's shoes and accomplished that feat.

Why? Why do they need to cut him some slack? Why?

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

It's just that nobody's crash-n-burn is as entertaining as yours is.

That seems like an odd point to belabor.
