  • P5 conference commisioners dish on first year of playoffs.

    http://mweb.cbssports.com/ncaaf/writ...-early-returns

Q: How do you think the playoff performed overall in its first season in 2014?
Greg Sankey, SEC commissioner: “There was more interest created in the regular season. All of a sudden, the first Tuesday in November is a rallying point around college football in a way that we had not typically seen until last year.”

John Swofford, ACC commissioner: “I thought it was as good a start-up as I’ve ever seen in terms of the first year. Things can always be made better. I couldn’t have been more pleased. … There wasn’t much not to like.”

Jim Delany, Big Ten commissioner: “The bedrock of this [selection] group was reputational equity, integrity, football knowledge and good representation . I thought … we put together a committee that everybody had to respect.”

Bob Bowlsby, Big 12 commissioner: “I thought that the playoff couldn’t have gone any better last year as far as the conducting of it.”

Larry Scott, Pac-12 commissioner:I thought it was a tremendous success. I was delighted. College football increased the level of interest amongst its fans. College football proved to be a much more national phenomenon.”

Doesn't Greg Sankey know that a playoff system makes the regular season less interesting rather than more? At least that is what all the BCS homers have said for more than the last decade.

        • B12 crotch kick

          http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_...ayoff-rankings

The College Football Playoff selection committee sent a message to the Big 12 Tuesday.

Once again, you'll have to show us more.

One year after getting snubbed from the playoff, the Big 12 had to feel disheartened after this season's first playoff rankings released Tuesday evening.
Selection chair Jeff Long said the committee had a difficult time evaluating the Bears and Horned Frogs, because of whom they've played so far. TCU and Baylor each have only one FBS victory so far over a team with a winning record (5-4 Texas Tech).

"Strength of schedule is what left us uncertain of their true strength," he said.

          • The biggest thing that stands out in the first rankings: Name matters. There is really no other explanation for Ohio State and Alabama being ranked where they are.

            • Here's the crotch kick that's gonna do it.

I sat in Kansas Memorial Stadium and watched the OU Gooners last weekend. I've now watched the Jayhawks play Baylor/OU in person. I have not seen the HornedFrogs/OkieState in person but cannot imagine those two teams beating OU. OU is the best team in the Big12. The UT loss was a fluke. Their defensive line is mean. Their receivers run like gazelles. Their QB was spot on getting the ball to the playmakers. They have two running backs who run like battering rams and look like pistons churning away down there. If they round out the Big12 schedule and don't get into the playoffs w/ 1 loss and victories over OkieState/TCU/Baylor, he!! is gonna freeze over here on the GreatPlains and the hammer's gonna drop on the Big12 one way or the other. Hope to gawd BYU is in a position to offer a solution.

              • The funny thing about the Big 12 is they play 9 conference games vs 8 for the SEC. Alabama has Louisiana Monroe, Charleston Southern, and Middle Tennessee on their non-conference slate but gets credit for scheduling Wisconsin. TCU has two cream puffs + Minnesota. So TCU has one less cupcake and one more P5 opponent than Alabama.

                • Minnesota is horrible. They've only beaten 1 P5 team this year.

tcu, Baylor, and Ok state combined have 1 OOC win over a P5 school. That, combined with no CCG is going to do them in after they lose once.

They're never leaving out an unbeaten defending champ. They showed that to us last year.

                        • Ok, I'm going to say this and I don't want to argue about it: the Big 12 is led by a group of short-sighted mental midgets.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

                              and Cincinnati, for that matter.
