  • Jake Trotter likes BYU

Trotter: Houston and Memphis are having fabulous years, but expansion shouldn't be dictated on a single season. If and when the Big 12 looks to expand, it will (or at least should) be examining who would bring the most to the Big 12 over the long-term, both on and off the field. That doesn't mean Houston and Memphis wouldn't be candidates. But a program like BYU has a much longer track record of consistent success on the field going back 40 years, as well as a built-in fan base that is not going to recede after a couple of losing seasons. That is something the Big 12 would have to consider.

I guess I shouldn't judge. Maybe in Carbon County or at BYU this passes for badass. I am 100% certain that the lady cougar volleyballers could kick Warrants badasses.

I remember back in the late 80s or early
90s when Axl Rose and Vince Neil had a media spat and, iirc almost ended up physically fighting each other. I thought that was pretty badass and it made them tough guys in my 12 year old book. Then, years later, I realized how small they both were and that they probably would both throw punches like a girl and the luster was lost.

If that is true it is purely hypothetical. The only thing they might fight over is the hairspray and I don't think the volleyballers would miss it much

Nah, but I'm pretty sure they have a warrant for your arrest.

                          • The Big 12 is concerned with recruiting. aTm is cleaning Texas and Oklahoma's clocks for local recruits. So is LSU for that matter.

They're not going to dilute things anymore with another Texas team. Houston is a total nonstarter.

Memphis is looking like a decent possibility. There isn't a team in western Tennessee, although Ole Miss along with the Vols recruit their heavily. There's only one BCS team in the state right now. Memphis also has a good basketball program. It's not a bad TV market.

                            Then there's Cincinnati.

Sorry, just playing devil's advocate here.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                            • Devils advocate = shit for brains.

Funny how historically awful programs sit in the middle of recruiting hotbeds. Sure USF, UCF, Memphis and Cincinnati have been horrible for the better part of the last forever and have less fan support than Utah State. They just need to be in the B12 so the players that wouldn't go to those schools in the first place can now go to Texas or Oklahoma because they'll get to play near home once or twice in their college career.

Ohio and Tennessee are the two largest states outside the northeast with only one major program. There are three major things the Big 12 is considering -- how much money will they bring in, how competitive are their programs and what will they do for recruiting.

BYU is better than those schools on the first two issues, but absolutely zero on the third item.

How is Rutgers support vs. Cincy? Was Maryland packing their stadium?
