  • Wow. I didn't chat with anyone from the BYU side (I can't pull myself to do that, despite my prev enthusiasm).

I think BYU is not sure what it's going to do. We'll have to see!

BYUGuy, JiC, and Surfah (and others) are correct to point out that Texas recruiting is a 2-way street. But there's something in the water here in Texas - "Texas pride", whatever... But it's real, all my kids want to go to college and live in Texas and that didn't come from their non-native Texas parents. Consequently, they consider attending BYU only if it it has a better academic program for their choice of study or if they don't get accepted to a better university in Texas. [Edit: Should point out that my family is somewhat unique when considering other LDS families we know. Many LDS families steer their kids to BYU even though they have a good chance of acceptance at UT and A&M - they don't even apply to those Texas schools. But non-LDS only go out of state (OU,LSU,Ark,etc) when they don't get accepted to UT or A&M.]

I think something similar occurs when signing on to play football. They'll look outside Texas when it provides the best opportunity at the next level. But when they can get a similar football opportunity and stay in Texas, that's where Texas A&M may have an edge.

But agree that UT has a lot of advantages over Texas A&M and that's reflected in any number of ways including signing the top Texas football talent. However, playing in a better football conference will not be one of the advantages the Longhorns will enjoy.

This is probably true, but I still don't think TAMU is taking recruits away from UT.

-Play in a superior conference against LSU and Alabama and call it a good year if you win 9 games.
-Play in Austin in a slightly lesser conference overall and have a chance to play in the BCS championship game--oh, and you'll also probably get more exposure for the NFL along the way if you have really big aspirations.

Some would argue that the first is better, but again, A&M's Texas recruiting is only going to improve if they take them away from the Longhorns, and I don't think playing in the SEC does much to accomplish that.

Bronco is going to have to think about making football his fourth most important priority.

Great Shirt, Scorcho. It warms my heart to know the rivalry is not dead.

When the rules changed in the Big 12, Nebraska simply went the Juco route like others were already doing. Tom Osborne's retirement from coaching along with Mack Brown and Bob Stoops hiring had everything to do with the change in power in the Big 12. No longer could Nebraska sign all-conference and all-American players from Oklahoma. The quality in recruits Nebraska could sign from Texas dropped off because of the resurgence of Texas and OU. The recruiting problems at Nebraska were compounded by having a HC who was extraordinary poor at it (and at being his own OC - but that's another story).

Nebraska will soon find out how competitive it will be in the Big Ten when it plays in Camp Randall this Saturday night. In my view, the Huskers have a stronger chance at playing in the Big Ten CCG (like they earned in the Big 12 the last two seasons) then becomming the "Kansas" of the Big Ten.
two deep were partial qualifiers. Look it up. Coaching is fine. But as the Bootlegger's Boy stated on page 69 of his modern day masterpiece, The Bootleggers Boy, "It ain't the xes and the oes, it's the Jimmies and the Joes." There is a reason Doctor Tom Osborne quit coaching shortly after he was cut off from his recruiting base.

And UNL has done nothing w/ the Jucos. That's the freaking genius of Bill Snyder. And since KSU has an entire school of Technology devoted to certificates and associates degrees, the Bucktoothed Wizard is in the exact right place for his wizardry amongst the Jucos.
