  • I'm not saying I'm a big fan of independence, but after a bunch of hand wringing by the fans, the deal turned out to be better than most of us expected when it was announced.

    8 year deal with ESPN.
    ESPN loves BYU
Rights to re-broadcast games immediately on completion.
    6-game series with Notre Dame.
WCC loves BYU for other sports.

Football scheduling issues in the last 12 months aside, BYU made out better than most of us initially hoped for when they announced independence.

My hope and prayer is that BYU is not killing themselves by dragging their feet, but that they are negotiating enough that fans will be happier than they expected when the invite is accepted and announced. Amen.

      • BYU isn't going to turn down an invitation. BCS inclusion is everything they've been working for. I suppose there is a slight chance that BYU doesn't end up in the Big 12, but BYU won't be the reason.

Viking inspires me. If BYU rejects the Big 12, I will never post again.

          1. What are ESPN's "outs" on the deal? I bet they have some very solid ways of getting out of the deal.

          2. Not if we suck. See point 1.

          3. OK, interesting.

          4. We would get 6 games with ND if we were in a power conference just the same.

          5. WCC love isn't like Big 12 love. the Big 12 is like a buxom blue-eyed blonde and the WCC is the librarian, or even worse, a nun.

I wouldn't bet on that being true. BYU doesn't have a med school because of morals and also despises the scientific method.

Now please excuse me for a minute. The sphincters in my elbow are starting to ache and I need some relief.

            • Should the invite come, what kind of minimum expenditures will be required of the school? I understand more money will come in, but overall I have to wonder if the church is uncomfortable with that. And of course they won't release financial info under any circumstances.

How many games a year will fans be willing to buy $50 tickets in the nosebleed section, as will be required to raise the funds necessary to prove they don't skim Widow's Mites to pay for football?

You completely missed the point of my post. Carry on.

                  No I get it.

But this is getting silly. We'll make, what, $4MM/year with an ESPN deal and have to pay people to come and play us?

Re: financial commitments BYU has to make, I have yet to hear a solid BCS program complain about the onerous financial terms imposed upon it by its conference!

                      1. Is there a nosebleed section at LES? I don't think so. Granted I have never sat at the top of the endzones ... but we are pretty high up on the sidelines and I think they are great seats.

                      2. BCS conference math would never require that. I just don't see it. Of course I can see how that would confuse a fan of a school who agreed to no revenue from their BCS conference for two years.

In the short term buying out most the games they lined up for the independent seasons.
