If Oregon were on the cusp, the Ducks might have gotten left out. But they weren't, Oregon had a conference championship and a well deserved #2 ranking. FSU was undefeated and defending national champions. Alabama was ranked #1 and going through one of the more dominant stretches in college football history. The team on the cusp was Ohio St. and the Buckeyes carry as much water in college football as the Sooners and Longhorns. Ohio St. had an impressive victory in their conference championship game. Texas and Oklahoma would both had been left out of the playoffs just like TCU and Baylor. The only difference is that Bowlsby would have been given orders to rectify the situation and expand the Big 12 before it happens to either team again.

Disagree. My perspective is that of growing up in the midwest and now living near the HQ of the Big 12. Not many teams could dislodge OU or UT but Ohio St. is one of the few. And it would occur only because the Big 12 is no longer playing a CCG while the PAC-12 and B1G expanded to do just that. If either OU or UT win a Big 12 championship game, they most likely retain their ranking and make the playoffs. But OU and UT will continue to be at risk by not playing a CCG while another tradional power wins their CCG.

a big SDSU supporter told me he spoke with an unnamed person in the Aztec athletic department at a recent basketball game and that person brought up the possibility of BYU and SDSU joining the Big 12
