With every major or minor shift, breathless speculation about Notre Dame's fortunes will follow. But after June 20, and probably for a while, the most likely scenario for Notre Dame is also the one least likely to excite anyone but the rabid followers of the school:

The Irish will be independent in football, still. They will be members of the Big East in most other endeavors, still.

And, still, everyone will wonder when they won't be either anymore.

This coupled with Maryland, Miami, and VaTech saying they are committed to the ACC, I get the feeling there won't be any major conference realignment this year. I have my doubts about FSU and Clemson joining.

If you are a conference commish, do you actively pursue Miami right now? they are radioactive and looking down the barrel at major sanctions. By the same token, do sanctions matter much these days if they are not SMU-caliber punishments?

Also, part of me wonders whether Miami and Notre Dame still hate each other (I know they just played a bowl game). Would the addition of Miami to the B12 at all dissuade the Irish from joining up? Could it be a factor in their minds that they do not want to be conference mates with the Convicts?

The worst part about being a BYU fan is that there is no sense of accountability to the donors and alumni base that the administration conveys. Your avg grad can't criticize the decisions (or lack of decisions) made by the prez, because he's an "anointed" person.

Cecil is never going to apologize for completely getting the B12 opportunity dead wrong last year. The BOT will never do so. Instead, if the program dies a slow death (looks more likely) then Tom Holmoe will get the blame.

In other universities, there's donor accountability. Not at BYU. It really stinks.

I advised a kid for the first time in my life who is a prized recruit not to go to play foozball at BYU yesterday because I don't know what the administration is committed to but it's not greatness. I told him to go to Stanford.

I go back to the September moment we had...the B12 was unstable. It needed us. Beebe needed us. We were asking for the world and overplayed our hand.

It's classic short-term thinking: we have a nice contract, supposedly, with ESPN. However, what happens if the program suffers during the term of the contract and it's not renewed? Who will care about the interim $$ if we've put the entire value of the program at risk? It just doesn't seem like long-term thinking. Who cares about $6mm a year if we drop off the face of the planet once the contract ends? It is a HIGH risk, LOW return strategy and I just don't get it...
