I asked previously and still don't understand why the conferences just don't force Notre Dame to join a conference. Why do they keep granting concessions? The football program hasn't been a consistent winner in decades. Also, the Irish are stuck because they couldn't move their teams out of the big east for a few years due to the mandatory notification period.

No conference has an interest in ND joining any ol' conference. They have an interest in ND joining *their* conference. Any conference that leads the charge to have ND join a conference makes it less likely that ND will join that conference. So, collective action problem.

SU is right...sort of. We have the qualifications. We just have a clergy led university.


I was chatting t up with The Man the other day and he recalled the Rex Lee days when a BYU president could actually show up to an event in a pair of jeans and a t shirt. Apparently, GAs are not allowed to remove their suit coats.

Who instituted the GA president policy at BYU?? Was t it when the church was being run. Y committee between benson and hinckley??

Well, I don't know if it's a collective action problem, per se. A collective action problem occurs when a certain course of conduct would be the most beneficial outcome, were it possible to coordinate efforts to make it happen. Here, however, most conferences are better off with Notre Dame independent, with the exception of the conference that Notre Dame joins. Notre Dame's traditional rivals span the continent: USC & Stanford from the Pac 10, Pitt (now in the ACC), Michigan, MSU, & Purdue from the Big 10, Navy (joining the Big East). If Notre Dame joins a conference, some of those teams get cut, and they lose an important rivalry. They would probably prefer that Notre Dame stay independent, if they aren't going to join THEIR conference. The Big 12 still hopes Notre Dame will join up with them, so they probably have a significant interest in keeping Notre Dame from joining a different conference.

If it were a collective action problem, the system on the whole would be better off with Notre Dame in a conference. I don't know that the benefits to the one conference they would join outweigh the harm to the individual conferences if they don't join with THEM. An independent Notre Dame may be the efficient outcome under the current system.

Of course, if we start talking about a system where we want the only ones in a playoff to be conference champions, and an independent Notre Dame is holding that up, then things may change.
