  • Is Boone Pickens involved with OSU in an official capacity, other than booster? It is really odd how vocal he is about being part of decisions, direction, negotiations, expansion, etc, when he is just a mega booster. He has been the most vocal OSU spokesperson to date.

    • Carlton: At least four Big 12 schools like Louisville... the solution may be to invite them both:

As many as four schools might be in favor of Louisville, including Oklahoma and Texas Tech.

Major Oklahoma State donor T. Boone Pickens told the Oklahoman that “I’ve got to be convinced on West Virginia” and called the school “pretty isolated.”

At least two sources suggested the possibility that the Big 12 might opt to invite both West Virginia and Louisville, leaving the league at 11 if Missouri leaves as expected.

The move would placate both schools, resolve an embarrassing issue and split the difference between those schools wanting 10 members and those wanting 12. Plus, the addition of two schools in the east might make more sense geographically.

While 11 isn’t a great number for conference scheduling, the Big Ten made it work for the better part of two decades after adding Penn State and before Nebraska joined.

By going to 11, the Big 12 could also position itself as a potential home for Notre Dame in all sports except football, where the Irish would remain independent. Notre Dame currently anchors its teams in the teetering Big East. With 12 members in men’s and women’s basketball, the Big 12 could return to divisions.

Because TV money would remain the same, the difference would be about $1.6 million per school per year as opposed to a 10-team league.

“An 11-and-a-half-team conference,” one source said.
Chancellor Kent Hance and Tuberville have gone public with their opinions... and gives the odds of adding BYU...

Texas Tech officials have yet to determine who they would most like to see replace Missouri in the Big 12 Conference, but Chancellor Kent Hance said Louisville makes the most logistical sense.

West Virginia appeared to be the choice of the Big 12 presidents after a Monday board of directors meeting, but now fellow Big East memberLouisvilleis back in the picture.

The Senate minority leader called Hance recently to lobby forLouisville.

“We haven’t made up our minds; we’ll accept either one and be happy with either one and get along with them,” Hance told The Avalanche-Journal on Wednesday. “But just the logistics,Louisvillewould certainly tend to be our first choice. It just is more logical.

      [...]

Tech football coach Tommy Tuberville echoed those sentiments Tuesday.

“In all this that’s happening,” Hance said, “every once in awhile someone’s got to look at the student-athlete and see what we are doing. ... If a kid’s missing three out of five days of classes, that’s a problem.”

      [...]

Hance confirmed that West Virginia and Louisville have been the most discussed to be the 10th member. BYU also has been considered as a potential new member of the Big 12, but Hance said the odds of BYU’s admission are “very low.”

When your donation has nine digits, you become officially involved.

        • There you have it. That's the most credible statement we've seen to date about the situation and it doesn't look good for the Cougars.

Sy kimball has given nine digits in his lifetime. He isn't walking around speaking like a moran. Nor does the university let him do so. Pickens isn't just out there, he seems to be the de facto spokesperson.

I googled Sy Kimball and in a roundabout way was lead to this old CB post. Good stuff, especially in retrospect.

That is pretty funny. Point 3, the least likely and least logical ended up being the card they played. And not only does ESPN want to broadcast 6 crap games, they want to broadcast 10 of them! I still think that was a deft move by Holmoe and company. While people dreamed it, I don't think anyone ever really believed that they could pull the ESPN deal they did.

I too googled it and found out that he is on the board here.

Sy and I used to live in the same stake for several years. He is a really good guy. He would put together these amazing meetings for several of us fellow BYU fans in the stake....usually with some BYU persona of interest. We also used to have a weekly call on Monday Morning with Brandon Doman. The call was known as "Monday Morning Quarterback," in which Brandon would call, give us the state of the state, allow folks to ask questions about the prior game or the season, in general. It was very cool. Monday Morning QB wasn't organized by Sy, but it made me think of him.

The meeting I described with Tom Holmoe was at the Newport beach country club. There were maybe 20 people there? It was great.

Shit. I am not as mad if they just reject us than if we had a chance and turned it down.
