I learned a few years ago that they do have lawyers, but they are not usually licensed. But that guy is now a federal judge.

I sat in on Georgetown law class once when I considered going there. It was exceptionally boring.

I'm aware that this story is even less interesting than niku's

Gotcha. Yeah, I don't believe that part either.

Commissioner Mike Slive says no other schools are currently being considered as 14th members of the Southeastern Conference.

Slive said Tuesday that Texas A&M is the only school to apply for membership. The Aggies will join the SEC next July, a move that was ushered in with festivities in College Station.

            • Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

              • I bet here's what we're going to hear next: B12 meeting resulted in an offer. Just watch. You'll see this light up CB light a x-mass tree and then everyone will start going with it.

I don't know this to be the case, but I could believe it is. But the way the intertubes works, it will get carried.

What rubbish! No school is being considered, until a decision has been made as to whether such school is acceptable, at which point we may or may not be told that the school was under consideration, but only if such disclosure benefits the party releasing the information.

And no school ever applies for membership in a conference until such school has been assured by the conference that it's application would almost certainly be accepted.

We should never expect to get any accurate information out of official spokespeople unless they are holding a press conference to tell us that a deal is done.

OTOH it can suggest which way the tree is leaning. If they thought it was likely that a school ouwld be added, they would either say nothing or say they are keeping options open or some such. This sort of statement suggests they think it is unlikely and want to get ahead of the expectations, while still leaving themselves with room to maneuver.

I think Eastern Carolina formally applied for membership in the Big East, but I doubt that the Big East told them they were a virtual lock.

With regard to the major moves, I agree that an A&M wouldn't apply to the SEC without an assurance that they were in beforehand.
