Mack agrees something has to happen for the championship game...
“TV is not going to allow the Big 12 not to have a presence on championship Saturday,” Texas head coach Mack Brown said. “So I think we'll work out something to where some of us play.”
Moving the red river game to championship Saturday may not be a near-term option:
However, the current agreement for the Red River Rivalry to be held at the State Fairgrounds runs through 2015, so it’s very possible that a schedule and venue change would not be able to take place until 2016. That’s where money comes into play — a factor not foreign to the Big 12.
Options:
(1) Let Jerry Jones throw some money at the moving the Red River game before the contract expires.
(2) Play Texas vs. Texas Tech on championship Saturday.
(3) Expand the Big 12.

One would work because the rivalry is big enough to grab eyeballs outside of the Big 12 footprint.
I would think 2 is a less than desirable solution. Lets see should I watch the SEC and ACC championship games (and in later years Big 10 and Pac 10) or Texas and Texas Tech, a game which may or may not mean anything? I think I will go with the championship games.
I would think getting a championship game would be most desirable.
George Meade made a series of mistakes. George Custer made one big one.
What are the series of mistakes Holmoe has made? (or is Holmoe Custer? I don't quite get the analogy).
I don't mean it snipingly. I have always viewed Holmoe as a nice guy who is a bit over his head as the AD, and who has lucked into a couple of very good coaches. A couple of friends who are closer to things than I am tell me that he is actually much better than I give him credit for. I am willing to be convinced either way.

It's hard to judge anyone on how they do their job down there because they are not given normal freedom to do their job and face the consequences. I have talked to people over the past 35 years about doing certain things. They have been let's say in the decision making loop below President level. More than a couple of times the answer was. I would like to do that or some of us think that is a good idea, followed by, it just won't fly right now with the higher ups. I cut Holmoe some slack.

I have heard only good things about him. As I posted below, his vague but tantalizing comments about "opportunities" ahead for BYU seemed to reflect some very poor judgment, unless he has something very concrete lined up. Creating expectations that way is dangerous.

Once in a while, PendenteLite takes over and forgets what board he's on. We're all left just scratching our heads and wondering what the heck he's talking about.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Completely agree. If this turns out to be nothing substantial, this would be a huge gaffe. He has to know that though, right?

#2 doesn't get you crap. Texas-TT is more akin to BYU-USU or Utah-USU than it is to BYU-Utah (to use comparisons Utahns will identify with). It's a big game, sure, but put it head to head with the SEC, ACC, Big 10 or even freakin' Sun Belt championship and it loses outside of TX.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

And how good is TT going to remain now that Cap'n Leach is gone?

We'll find out.

Ding ding ding! Unlike other schools, the AD at BYU does NOT wear the pants in the athletic department. Just go ask Rondo Fehlberg if you don't think that is the case. Heck, unlike other schools, the AD at BYU doesn't even report directly to the President. There is a layer of Vice Presidents as well as the "University Athletic Advisory Council" that the BYU AD must deal with. Oh yeah, and that minor little thing called the Board of Trustees. Heck, Holmoe doesn't even have the final say on hiring/firing coaches.
A good AD at BYU must be able to navigate the various hierarchies and massage the various egos and kiss the various butts that need kissing.
This is why I thought the whole "Holmoe in Dallas" thing was so stupid. Anyone who thinks the BYU AD would be the point man on negotiations of that magnitude is dreaming.

I wouldn't be so sure. But he didn't really say anything, did he? It's mostly desparate and fanciful BYU fans grasping at subtexts that this is all about.
That being said, I think he should have been a stand up guy and said byu opted out of the Pac 10 a long time ago; if we get an offer consistent with our mission, etc., we'll consider it, etc.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
