State law doesn't seem to keeping UCLA, Cal Tech, Cal or...um...the South Carolina Cocks down on this regard. I guess Utah is more progressive than California, it has no use for standardized tests.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I had to laugh at this part as well...

BYU wants a contractually stipulated agreement in place, guaranteeing Texas' commitment to the Big 12.
Didn't aTm sign a 10 year contract to stay in the Big 12 last year?

At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I don't mean this to sound trollish, and I think this is a thread for the byu-fans, but I'm genuinely curious why the Big-12 doesn't just invite the byu regardless of aTm's decision.

As many have pointed out, there are some good arguments for putting the byu into the Big-12. If I'm the byu, I'm pissed that somehow membership is contingent on whether or not another team bolts, like it's some kind of nightclub with a velvet rope across the entrance.

I know we like these things to be in nice even numbers, but the Big 10 had 11 teams for 20 years.

That's why I think we're missing the bus a bit in speculating about who's leaving, staying, package-deals, etc. If negotiations and conversations between the byu and the Big-12 are going on, I think they should be headed along those lines.

At any rate, I wish the least amount of anxiety with maximum hope to my amigos that are byu fans.

I think that's a good question. As I recall, for a number of reasons, the B-12 decided to stay 10 schools after Nebraska and Colorado left. I suspect if aTm wasn't leaving, the B-12 would have stayed at 10 schools for a few more years to see how that worked, and then probably considered further expansion. With aTm leaving, the conference needs to do something to get back to at least 10 schools, if not to expand beyond that.
                              Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
