Among the many "years to forget" for Houston Cougars faithful, 2001 stood out for several reasons.
The Dana Dimel disaster. The Chet Gladchuk departure. 0-11. And, of course, the great temporary seat debacle. Fifteen years ago this week, UH officials pretty much dressed up in clown suits - featuring prominent red noses - and made fools of themselves. The short version of the story: UH had a home game scheduled against Texas, in which UT was guaranteed 10,000 seats. Since the year before UH had moved from the Astrodome to Robertson Stadium, which held just 32,000, that was a challenge.
To which UH responded by putting up temporary seats. Four days before the game, UH school president Arthur Smith declared the seating unsafe, and instead of moving the game to Rice Stadium or the Dome, which were available, offered to let more than 4,000 UT fans watch the game at Hofheinz Pavilion. UT athletic director DeLoss Dodds used the word "appalled" 48 times that week, an unofficial school record, and a measly four people were watching the grainy screens in Hofheinz when the game kicked off.
