Berry Tramel keeps talking about BYU: Which combo of two schools is the best option?
http://m.newsok.com/article/5432044
Cincinnati & Brigham Young: The Big 12 would like to expand East more than West, since West Virginia already is on an island. But the two best available candidates are Cincy and BYU. Their football is major-conference caliber; BYU has a great fan base, and Cincinnati has upgraded its facilities and is in a prime recruiting area. Stretching the league from Provo, Utah, to Morgantown, W.Va., is not ideal, but it’s the best option.
Boise State & Brigham Young: If BYU and Boise State joined the Big 12, the Big 12’s football brand would be enhanced. No doubt about it. But there are other problems. The Big 12 would have a football program that rarely sells out its 36,000-seat football stadium (Boise State), a member run by the Mormon Church with a reputation that it’s hard to deal with (BYU), a member that was a junior college as recently as 1965 (Boise State) and the league would stretch from Idaho to West Virginia. But the Big 12 could counter some of those problems by adding Boise State and BYU for football only. BYU already is a football independent and plays in the West Coast Conference for other sports. Still, that’s a Mickey Mouse way to run a league. Whatever gains were made by the better football would be harmed by impression of satellite members.
Here’s the bottom line. There are not two candidates that are Big 12-ready. Frankly, Brigham Young is. Geographically and politically there are issues, but BYU’s program is major-conference caliber. Every other candidate requires some growing pains.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

The fact that he has Boise in there shows he doesn't know what he's talking about. "a member run by the Mormon Church with a reputation that it’s hard to deal with (BYU)": lol And he has to ask himself what's the problem with BYU!Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostBerry Tramel keeps talking about BYU: Which combo of two schools is the best option?

Well, BYU deserves some credit. Without it you're not a Ute fan and SeattleUte as a sports message board poster wouldn't exist.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostThe fact that he has Boise in there shows he doesn't know what he's talking about. Way too much smoke now for no fire to exist. This is going to happen. Now Andy Katz is on board the BYU hype train!

I love this meme about BYU rubbing people the wrong way. It makes SeattleUte's head explode. On one hand, it supports his contention that BYU is obnoxious. on the other hand, it destroys his premise that BYU was not a serious target for the B12.BYU is attractive because it is a school that has a national footprint and it has a competitive football program. It has a national draw and should be able to hold its own in TV ratings. Not only would they bring in the Salt Lake City market, but they would bring in the Latter Day Saints market across the country.
The disadvantage is that BYU is a more religious school than is Baylor. BYU does not play games on Sundays and says it will never do so. There is also the distance between Provo, Utah, and Morgantown, West Virginia. And there is talk that the Cougars rubbed several of the Big 12 presidents the wrong way in earlier discussions about joining the conference.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Who is this guy? From looking him up, the best I can tell is maybe he's a businessman who thinks he knows more than the average fan based perhaps on his business connections? Hard to tell. He tweets things and gets cited on college sports message boards a lot. The other commentators/columnists and those who claim to be insiders mostly seem to be disagreeing with him about UH, while they're all at least saying BYU is a credible candidate. But who knows. Nothing the Big 12 does should surprise anyone.Originally posted by YOhio View Post

The Sunday play issue, which isnt really an issue in mens basketball. There are very few games played on Sunday in the b12 and the conference tournament is over on a Saturday.Originally posted by Clark Addison View PostAssuming there is any bit of truth to this, why would we be protective of our WCC membership? I assume it would be us mandating the "Football Only" membership, not the B12? If it did happen like this, I would hope we would move to full membership within a couple of years.Fitter. Happier. It's not what BYU would really want. The reason BYU would be invited football only is because it would be a quick and easy way to not have to deal with the Sunday play issue at all since it doesn't matter in football. In all other sports it does to one extent or another. BYU would take full membership. But Fox Sports Net would have a hard time with the Sunday thing because they need inventory -- even the last day of the Big 12 golf tournament or track meet on Sunday is much better for them than a syndicated fishing show or infomercial. BYU being in the league negates almost all Big 12 programming on Sunday afternoons/evenings which are pretty significant time slots for a cable sports network. I really believe Fox is the party with the biggest problem with BYU not playing on Sunday.Originally posted by Clark Addison View PostAssuming there is any bit of truth to this, why would we be protective of our WCC membership?
