It's also feminine in Spanish. The reason it gets a masculine article is because the stress falls on the first syllable, and the normal feminine article 'la' would slur into the accented 'a' of 'alma.' Spanish doesn't take the Italian approach of l'alma, so they change a-words with stress on the first syllable to 'el' when they are singular (el hacha, el agua, el águila). When the word is pluralized, it uses the feminine article because the slur danger has passed: 'las almas.'Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View Postit also means "the soul" in Italian, but it's a feminine word and therefore 'l'alma'."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. Now that I've learned something for today, I can turn my brain off. Thanks for that, wuap. I almost feel indebted to you.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostIt's also feminine in Spanish. Those are tough degree requirements. I've heard that before. You're a Texas fan like 3D is a USC fan. Absent a diploma, or at least some significant classes there, or donating a lot of money or something, you can't lord Texas over me. So why aren't you a Rice fan? When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

In the South, many people identify with regional teams as their own in spite of never having attended there. My cousins are all UGA or Georgia Tech fans even though they all went to community colleges. The only two of us who ever actually attended them (me=gatech, my sister=UGA) don't really follow them, though the 1990 season was great at tech for football and basketball."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. Did you know that people throughout the entire nation do that as well? Not just in the South. See, we're not so different after all.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostIn the South, many people identify with regional teams as their own in spite of never having attended there. Dammit, I was trying to sound patronizing. You messed up my plans. I'm starting to think that Y in YOhio stands for Yankee.Originally posted by YOhio View PostDid you know that people throughout the entire nation do that as well? Not just in the South. You're right. I think I've explained my moniker before but I'll quickly do it again. The Y in my name is a tribute to my alma mater and favorite college football team, Brigham Young University. Ohio is the state I live in and love. I combined those two and voila, YOhio. It has nothing to do with the New York Yankees.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostI think it is for BYU, as I am pretty sure he is a Reds' fan in baseball.
