  • Facilities Inquiry

This question is probably mostly addressed to BoylenOver and Hot Lunch, but i'm really interested in any info. As a fan, I see the outside only of RES. It is a nice stadium, and i understand that it can be expanded, and likely will, in the next few years. It obviously isn't larger than LES, but it is equally as nice. I just listened to Dick Harmon on ESPN. He mentioned that BYU's facilities were better. That got me to thinking about the south endzone box at RES, which was built many years ago, and under which are the locker rooms. Are they a mess? How do they compare to BYU's similar facilities? Also, with the new Alex Smith center, i would imagine that the strength training facilities are as nice at Utah as at BYU, if not nicer.

How do the two university's compare, and how does Utah's compare to what you may or may not have seen at current PAC10 schools?

When Dick Harmon says that BYU has better facilities, you need to remember that it is Dick Harmon saying it. The only thing BYU has on Utah right now is more seats in the stadium.

I don't think so Il Paddy.

I'd have to think BYU should have some good karma stored up by now, too.

As far as facilities are concerned?

Is there anybody who has actually seen both of the facilities and cares to comment?

The locker rooms under the stadium are not very good. Honestly, BYU's lockers rooms are much better for both home and visiting teams. That being said, Utah's locker rooms are better than every other team in the MWC. I think they will need a big upgrade to compare to a lot of the Pac 10 teams and I assume that will happen with stadium expansion.

As for facilities, BYU has Utah beat on the weight room and student athlete center. BYU has a top notch weight room, locker room, study hall/computer lab and training room. They are all in the same facility. The locker room that the football team trains in at BYU is only for the football and men's basketball team. Utah's is good, don't get me wrong but BYU's is better. The indoor facilities are 6's.

I haven't seen many facilities of Pac-10 schools. Just opposing locker rooms. I toured USC's facilities back in '96 and participated in a camp at UCLA the same year. USC's set up is incredible. UCLA's campus and practice facilities were awesome. I have seen all the get up at ASU as well. Pretty nice.

I guess Hot Lunch is the authority on this. I've only seen the stadiums and practice facilities of both schools, but HL has seen more and therefore, I accept that his call is accurate.

Even with the Alex Smith and Stevonne Smith donations?

I also think that when Utah fills in the south end zone, it will be won of the nicest set ups for a stadium of that size in the college football landscape. Except for the south end zone, RES is an incredible set up. Fill in the south and you have 60k and a full bowl. Full bowl stadiums are by far the best IMO. I would also love to see the U put "UTAH" in big red block letters on the roof of the field house. I love the set up that has in the North seeing the old field house. I think that would be a cool little touch.

Yep. BYU's weight room and training facility is top notch. It probably compares to some of the best in the country.

Just curious as to what makes it so nice?

We were doing a tour of the SAC right after it was built on Thanksgiving Week. Ran into George Curtis and he offered to give us a tour of the training facilities. Impressive. According to him, it rivals what some NFL team have (or had at that time).
