You're probably right. This rivalry had gotten too bitter, too disfunctional. I really hope that being in different conferences will bring back the fun and end the hatred.

I don't really care if it's bitter or friendly, as long as we win.

Well, the pessimists are clearly in the majority. Perhaps I should just shut the board down now and save us all a lot of pain and misery.

Will the rivalry be changed forever? Sure. Is the rivalry dead? No way. Lots of reasons why BYU should still remain competitive enough to keep the rivalry interesting.

The rivalry will be here for a long time. The change will be the relative prominence of each program.

                            This thread sickens me.

Loss of innocence? End of the rivalry as we know it? You cougars pansies need a lesson from landpoke on how to cowboy up.

I believe that it is precisely BECAUSE both sides of the rivalry are Utahans (per your definition), the rivalry will persist. It won’t remain exactly the same as it is now, but it will evolve into something new. It already has done so several times over.

The fact is BYU didn’t even consider Utah a rival until the 90’s, and even then only as a pesky little one at that. Now we stand at a crossroads where the dynamic has again (pending official announcement) changed. However this time the change simply reverses the positions of the fan bases, and it IS the fan bases that make the rivalry.

All smack aside, as a level headed Ute fan I will concede (in this instance only) that in the past we have indeed been the little brother to BYU. But now BYU fans are faced with this choice: do you bow out of competition with “little” brother just because you have been “shown up?” Because he now runs with the popular crowd, the sibling rivalry is therefore strained or dying? How come it doesn’t surprise me that Cougars don’t want to compete anymore when it appears that they no longer maintain an elitist upper hand over Utah?

As for the quality of the rivalry game itself, its all in how competitive the game is. I has the MWC title and BCS at large berth ever come down to the victor of the rivalry game? We’ve all fantasized about how cool it would be, but it hasn’t ever materialized The rivalry has been great recently because of the competition in the game, and I unless the cougars are afraid of the PAC-10 logo, I don’t think it ever will.

When a PAC-10 Utah scrapes by with a last minute 3-point win for the first time in LES, Cougars will remember themselves and the rivalry venom will all come rushing back, only with a different flavor.

How do I know? How do we, Ute fans know? Because we’ve been there. We’ve coveted what you Cougars have had for so long. We’ve been little brother fighting for our share of the local attention. We’ve been fighting to force you, Cougars to take notice and acknowledge us. We’ve been motivated by it. We’ve thrived off of it. Now it’s our turn for the limelight.

And now it’s your turn to be in our spot, Cougars. Whether this remains a great rivalry is in YOUR hands. Force us to remember the rivalry, if we get cocky. Covet what we (presumably) have attained and fight for your break.

In closing, When your little brother starts running with the popular crowd, and mocks you with newfound confidence do you roll over and sigh:“oh well, it was fun being big brother while it lasted.”?

No. You beat him up. You beat up his crowd. You kiss all their girlfriends, and take back dad’s car.

In short, you let him know who big brother really is.

Buck up you pretty boys and be men for once. Reclaim your big brother status.

                            Rant over.

Note: I am a long time lurker formerly of utefans until i found CUF and switched my lurker allegance last year. I had hoped that my first post wouldn't be so incendiary, but I love rivalry and feel strongly about it.
