I doubt the Big 12 dissolves. Where would that put Kansas? They are a perennial top 5 basketball program and I can't imagine them standing alone after the whole thing blows up.

I'm guessing that whatever happens, the Texas and Oklahoma schools stay together and they keep Kansas. They might add TCU and BYU or possibly even BSU and if they are really stuggling to fill some holes they'd look to Houston (commuter school with small fanbase like Utah) or Rice (just for academics and baseball of course).
I didn't say they would only go after B12 teams. I was simply speaking about the B12. Those other schools make sense, as well, but clearly the prize to be had is Texas and OU, which would be more ripe to leave if 3 other B12 schools also bolt. It would be tougher to pry away ACC schools that have no real immediate need to jump since the ACC would be in no real danger of dissolution. The Big 9 would have major problems.

What happened to UConn? I thought some analyst listed UConn as the leading candidate. I'm not sure about this rumor.

Where in all this does Kansas fit in? I think I'd sooner have Kansas as Nebraska, maybe even Missouri, all things considered.
rutgers is a sleeping giant the same way SDSU is a sleeping giant. Great location, lousy results. Rutgers had one really good season, that is about it. Whatever happened to Northwestern football? I seem to remember Northwestern being the darlings of college football for a couple of seasons in the 90s.

I was going to say that the Florida schools would be the first consideration for the SEC. I can't see them poaching anyone from Tobacco Road, but realignment can cause some crazy things to happen.

What I find crazy about this whole thing is that the conferences want to go to 16 schools. Doesn't anyone remember the WAC expansion and what a mess it was? 16 schools in a conference is just crazy. The only reason I can see behind it is that they want to further restrict who gets a share of the pot. They leave a lot of bottom feeder schools out in the cold if they successfully dismantle the Big XII, the ACC, and or the Big East. If this goes through and the Big 10, SEC and PAC 10 become super conferences by raiding/destroying the others then that is just complete madness, the craziest thing to ever happen in college sports

Totally agree. I hope the Pac 10 goes to 12 teams and holds. 16 teams or even 14 is madness, destroys the character of the conference. The Big Ten has lost it.

This "super conference" talk is scary. I fear it's going to hurt college football.

If all this conference expansion talk ends up being just off season chatter I am not going to believe anything about expansion again, until at least next March.

I posted a link recently to someone's hypothetical superconference geographic layout. It was last week, I think. I dont want to look for it, but it actually might wind up being pretty accurate.

The Big 10, ACC, and SEC could all expand and make the Big East cease to exist. Big 10 takes Pitt, Syr & Rutg, SEC takes Louisville and WVA, ACC takes UConn, Cinn & SFl. No more Big East.

Of course MWC autobid is shut down by Utah & BYU (&TCU?) leaving. Expansion is clearly all about money, and splitting the BCS pie 5 ways instead of 7 is a major driver...

The biggest player in all this is getting the conference network on basic table. The big 10 is goiing to 16 teams so they can get their network on basic cable in new york and st louis.
If you are the pac10 and you are starting a network you want to get on basic cable in as man big markets as possible

However, just because it is located in tri-state doesn't mean people watch it. Which is why I asked whether people watch Rutgers sports. Maybe they do.

An expansion to 16 teams is almost like not expanding much at all. Many of the teams wouldn't play each other anyway. There is really little difference between expansion to 16 teams and expansion to 20 teams from a scheduling standpoint.
Think of the recruits coming out of the Tri-State area.. Including in Basketball as well..

I think if Big 10 goes to 16 and steals Nebraska and Mizzou that the Pac 10 ought to try killing the Big X11 and try adding Texas, T A&M, OK, Kansas, Colorado, and Utah and put them with the AZ schools in a 8 team Pac 10 east division. The AZ schools will complain but nobody will care.

I'm starting to believe BYU gets left in the cold in all this and I think David Locke said it best. If BYU's going to hang onto the no Sunday play and all the other non-standard things they do, such as avoid GC Saturday play, get the GA's involved in every major decision (ala the Thanksgiving day game with Utah a while back), apply the Honor Code in a way that stops them from recruiting black non-LDS then what they really need in a conference is to be the big dog in their conference. As BYU fans we probably ought admit defeat on this and get comfortable with the idea that we have limitations. We can still field top 20 teams, but we will always have a need to be special when it comes to our contractual obligations.
