You seem doomed to serve as the sports equivalent of the slave who stands on the back of the commander's chariot, whispering in his master's ear that "All glory is fleeting." We know that. But it's fun to enjoy in the present.
It's not about that. BYU never played any real teams. But BYU didn't look dominant even agaisnt the bad teams it played. BYU's achievement wasn't even as big as Murray State basketball's this year.

I'm now instituting a policy agaisnt arguing this further. It's worthy of prolonged debate, like some other subjects I eschew.

Right, because winning the Sugar Bowl is better than winning the national championship.
Beating a Alabama team that had proven itself on the gridiron in the Sugar Bowl to cap an undefeated season is better than beating a bad Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl. I don't care what labels you put on it. Besides, Utah's wins are more recent, when the system is more equitable, players are stronger, etc. It's just a more sterling achievement no matter how you look at it.

As you can't make a case for a more deserving winner, I, too, shall consider the matter closed.

That sounds like a white flag to me. It's probably wise of you to surrender against such overwhelming odds. At this point, you're only diminishing the diminisher.

YOU may not care what labels WE put on it, but I would certainly care about what labels the Associated Press puts on it. #1 is an awfully nice label.

ELO chess said we're no. 1. How do you think chess picks the champion of the world? I'd rather have the ELO chess no. 1 ranking.

yowza.. I think a 10-run rule should come into play here. Now it's just getting sad.

They should hang a banner next to the "We're No. 2" banner: "But we were number 1 if you use the formula they use for chess champions!! That's WAY better than a consensus national championship!!"

Technically, I think it is a big shiny metal football to prove it. I don't think there was a crystal football back in 84.

At any rate, it was definitely the result of a consensus vote. The consensus of college coaches agree with us. As a non-coach, SeattleUte's opinion on this matter is evidently on par with tooblue's non-coach basketball analysis of the BYU/K State game.

Congratulations to the Utah Utes, who can now be mentioned in the same breath as these other past champions:
